The way it works is that the client downloads all resources dynamically as you need it. The files on github do not contain the proprietary resources, but you need to have them from a real client to actually run the server.

The client we've been using for decades is so fucking arcane and impenetrable that its impossible to fix long standing bugs or change the UI whatsoever. Shit like poslag, desyncs, the camera, retarded tile interactions, the font being a singular hardcoded size designed for an 800x600 monitor, all of that is just shit we've lived with and went "yeah that's ragnarok".
I don't have high hopes for a un*ty project, but this is the only actual effort being put into fixing what was previously unfixable.

Someone did this with Maplestory a few years ago. Completely redid the client. It worked in the browser, supported multiple UI options like the alpha, beta, and pre-bigbang styles, was less laggy, and got rid of a lot of shit like delays on looting.

It launched and Nexon killed it within the week. Their own client is spaghetti code constantly needing unscheduled maintenance and yet one guy as a hobby completely rewrote and fixed everything in like 3 years.
The source code was never released and the creator of the rewrite is a massive faggot btw.

Private servers have no control over the client. It's what the Koreans put out and we modify it using diffs provided by the guys who reverse engineer it. The slow way, via hex editing.

What Doddler is doing is remaking the client from scratch. He's already done making it look 1:1 with the original game. Once you boot it up, it's visually the same. I mean, the UI isn't there yet but the actual graphics are identical.
But now we have control over making new classes(servers that do this current overwrite existing one). Not just that, we can make custom homunculi, custom weapon/shield sprites. Hell, you could even make equipment visually appear on your character.
We can have dynamic weather and day/night cycles, shadows that move over time as the sun/moon goes overhead. You can make entirely new menus. You can have entirely new monster behavior.
You can change the control schemes, too.
Want WASD moves? You can have it.
More info on minimap? We can have it.
Want to have 1st person view? Got it, senpai.

Anything your heart desires, all doors open. Playing in VR, multiple players riding the same Peco Peco, actual flying, vertical maps, extremely long maps without transitions, no desync, split screen couch coop. The sky's the limit.

tl;dr it's the holy grail of customization being given to a community that thrives on customization

Despite popular belief, Gravity doesn't give a shit. The "lawsuits" from a couple of years ago was a singular case against a single server.
Said server was using a legal company in the US to collect cash shop money and make themselves legal. Gravity had the obligation to move in and secure their rights because, failing to do so would be giving up rights to the game.

Private server owners saw this and had the perfect excuse to close up servers, run away with the money and disappear without trace.

There were some great games that gave you a sense of adventure but to say every MMO did that is too much. Even before WoW hit we were starting to see low effort clones that didn't get the point. In most Korean MMOs enemy depth amounts to little more than them being a health bar you gotta empty before they empty your health bar. Of course it got a lot worse after WoW with so many more games being released.

Still early Ragnarok stands out in the enemy variety IMO. When you consider that it came out at a time when most games of the genre had enemies that leashed onto you until they died or you changed the zone, Ragnarok was quite different. Sure, those other games like EQ and FFXI had variety in playstyles and many viable strategies to level up. If there's something to complain about RO is that the party play tends to boil down to AoE mobbing and the class design/balance is a bit lacking which leads to couple strong builds and a lot of shitty ones.

Hard to say. I've been following it for years and there are really interesting things they managed to do. They have been able to restore skills that were removed and no longer exist in the modern version of the game, for example.
They have the same problem that RO does, where they are limited by what the client allows. You definitely want to use a modern client because the OG from 10 years ago had terrible performance issues. But at the same time, the modern client makes it hard to restore the original class system with multiple circles.

I believe all these issues will be fixed in due time. Right now, the people working on it are putting the bulk of their work into getting classes to be player. That means coding the hundreds of unique skills for the several dozens of classes under each basic class tree.
