Lads, I have a shit computer with 8GB RAM and I5, it can run windows 11 but it takes up half of my RAM. Should I install linux? Which distro should I use? I just play classic wow and old retro games.

i literally just followed the wiki and the most complex thing you have to do is edit some file to change locale and currency or something
was i being meme'd on by everyone saying it was hard?

Try out Pop Os, their cosmic DE variant is pretty cool (though it's bugs a bit curently)
Using it on my thinkpad x240 with 4gb of ram, for small and old games very good.

I do not recommend going on Archlinux from zero, unless you really want pain. (try Monjaro distro if you really want Arch based OS at least for start (it's still sucks))

Bazzite I don't use because it's Fedora based, which is cringe. (also Your pc might even not run this distro correctly, it's a bit not for old hardware) add more specs for post.

Also there's Linux Mint distro, it's okay. Just kinda generic.

Have fun Linuxing around

It's nice to have a Linux thread when you run into Linux specific issues at least it's there but they are usually dead with about 10 poster top and /vg/ is too fast for one to always be up, but most of all at the end of the day it's still PC gaming.

Yes you were memed, but also no you were not. There is nuance. Getting a working arch install is easy, fully configuring it to be a desktop os with all the stuff that you need working... Not so much. There is a huge amount of stuff arch doesn't do by default if you don't use arch install from trim to disabling power saving on hda.

he's not wrong that the default installation is very barebones. no internet, no firewall...
it's missing plenty of stuff that you're meant to configure for yourself which would already be included in most other distributions like microcode updates.

Snaps are great for a server or a work computer, because they require very little overhead from an administrator.
For a home user, however, the general sluggishness of it and lack of theming make the home desktop experience quite unpleasant.

The default action for .exe files there is always Run and not Open with Wine

GNOME for the minimalistic UI - particularly good if you're on a laptop or tablet.
KDE for the windows like UI and if you like customizing your pc.
everything else is outdated and you really only should be considering them if you have a shitty pc with low specs.

similar design language to windows by default
very customizable
"bloated" but also robust
then you get into specialized shit later on

but most importantly it's not made by devs that hate other developers and users and intentionally make retarded decisions, block feature development in other projects, refuse to implement agreed upon standards for no reason, and cause a myriad of other problems like GNOME is
needless to say their bad behavior also bleeds into the design of their software and most of it has terrible UX

Do your programs crash because of lack of RAM? Because idle RAM usage isn't really indicative of how much your OS is actually using, because a lot of it is probably RAM cache that your OS cleans up whenever you need more RAM. Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

You being able to configure your system isn't free, someone has to develop the options, someone has to maintain them, someone has to make sure that when new features are added that the old options still work.
GNOME developers decided to outsource the configuration to extensions, which means a more stable system with less bloat that develops faster. if you want more features, you get extensions, of which there are plenty - because it's fucking GNOME.

Almost half of them die before the bump limit >>>/vg/534119850 because there just aren't enough regular posters to keep it alive when a few of us just happen to be busy at the same time. Too many Linux gamers are only interested in posting on /v/, where the Windows shills lose their minds at the sight of a penguin, because that drama is more entertaining than a thread where Linux gamers just chill and Linux haters don't bother to go. Plus the gacha spam on /vg/ is so fast that there are sometimes 3 of a given anime game's general on the catalog at once because they hit the bump limit that much faster than they go from bump-limited to archived.

Cinnamon, the one the comes with Linux Mint, is also good but it's X11 only because of less development resources to move to wayland which means that Freesync and different refresh rates on multiple monitors are out of the question.

Yeah, so? Those aren't GNU and cannot run GNU software without recompiling and, at times, rewriting GNU-specific extensions.

You can run BSD software on GNU as well by recompiling, it doesn't mean that GNU and BSD are the same or that the difference isn't important. It merely means that both operating systems are UNIX-like.

Hell, the entire reason RMS made GNU Unix-like was PRECISELY because it meant devs could port their software from proprietary UNIX distributions to GNU is Not Unix without having to make extensive rewrites. Had GNU started in the 90s, he would've made it Windows-like instead.

Being POSIX or UNIX is irrelevant to the issue.

Both Android and ChromeOS are operating systems without an actual kernel, yet they're not called "Android/Linux" or "ChromeOS/Linux" and people accept them as operating systems. Only with GNU there is this retarded idea that it's not an OS because... it just isn't. There is no reason.

I've been using Linux for the past 20 years, actually.
Ubuntu began its decline with the introduction of the Unity desktop, but when snaps were introduced in 2016 they also added a shit-ton of telemetry and this collectively represented the point where it was unrecoverable.
The last actually good version of Ubuntu was in 2008.
