Double-bladed lightstaber was a really simple and easy weapon style to use. Basically tard-proof. Dual Sabers had a higher skill ceiling but you could really fuck shit up with them when you got gud.

I was 8 when The Phantom Menace came out, and indeed, I thought he was the coolest shit. Nowadays, I just can't understand why Filoni, or whatever that dude who's obsessed with the prequel era is named, is so obsessed with him. To me, Maul perfectly represents the sad state of modern Star Wars: a franchise obsessed with specific iconography, that's in the hands of a dude who suffers from arrested development.
