The glasses-free 3D on the 3DS was amazing and it should have become a standard feature on all portable devices.
Fuck you cowards for now full blasting it on every game (unless you are stereoblind, which you probably aren't).

What were some 3DS games with great 3D that you liked?

anyway mario 3d land I think was pretty good.
If you have hacked 3ds, I'd recommend trying virtual boy emulator on it. It's actually pretty good 3d effect

The 3d was good, though underutilized. I'd be more happy about the 3ds if the 3d and ds weren't entirely nuked, but that's just standard Nintendo fare

Im pissed they got rid of it and that itll never come back because the meme that it was shit already set in by the time they fixed it with the new 3ds. Games on a 3d screen genuinely felt like a generational leap without fucking with VR headsets or 3d glasses.
Bravely default was the best looking game in 3d, I remember the monster hunter games looking nice too.

Yeah it was that plus cost. I remember seeing a couple for sale like a decade ago but they were like $5-10k and only supported ~30 degree viewing angle IIRC.
Then there's also just the fact that 24fps video looks like shit in 3D, but everyone is afraid of HFR movies, so a lot of people either don't like or are indifferent to 3D movies which further stagnates adoption; keeping production and research low which prevents cost of 3D from coming down.

I saw an eye tracking solution (like New 3DS) at CES sometime ago, but I don't know how people would feel about having a camera that can tell you're looking at your TV. It would probably be used for advertising. What a gay world.

I full blasted it and enjoyed it a lot.
Was excellent in games like Etrian Odyssey IV and Animal Crossing New Leaf.
The only games that didn't do it well were Pokemon, for some reason even only in battles or camera modes the limited use of it caused extreme lag not present in other games.
The 3D also sharpened the low res and colors for some reason.

Basically every early 3DS game was on-point for stereo.
Only had 3D Land when it was the current gen console, but I played Starfox 64 3D multiplayer and that was also pretty damn good with its 3D. SEGA 3D Classics Collection was also solid as the flat layering of sprites is fairly difficult to fuck up.
Still livid about Pokรฉmon being shitty about not doing 3D and in general as the console went along fewer and fewer games even bothered to set up the stereoscopy properly. By the end of the console's life most games looked like flat ass in 3D.
Still want to get a 'New' 3DS, not the shitty XL, because the homebrew scene with the 3D is something that looks like a ton of fun. Only had a launch console, getting a console at launch being a mistake I'm never making again.

Passive 3D was fine, the glasses were lightweight, very cheap and TVs came with 5 pairs of them. The only problem is that in order to display 3D vertical resolution had to be halved, that and it was a tech exclusive to LG TVs so if you bought any other brand you had these horrible glasses that gave you headaches and ghosting up the ass.
With 8k displays it would be possible to have a proper 4k image and with how big TVs have gotten it would look amazing. The only caveat is that it would have to be downgraded to miniLED/VA because OLED has terrible grey uniformity.

3D TV/Displays mostly died for the same reason VR has where they market it as a full on replacement for standard displays and don't really invest in getting media producers to offer functionality for them.
This kinda sucks too, since like imo some games are pretty objectively way more fun to play in 3D.
Like when I got my friend to play Sonic Generations in 3D.

Which is never going to take off and will immediately die because its too expensive, too niche and so will get no content. If you're going to spend 2k on that you might as well buy a VR headset, at least you'll have shit to play. Someone like nintendo leveraging the tech was the ideal scenario, I'm still waiting for them to save VR too.

>The only problem is that in order to display 3D vertical resolution had to be halved,
This is slightly less of a problem these days, as you for movies anyway, you can't even buy UHD-3D discs because the retards making the spec didn't have provisions for 4K 3D (or 48fps / 60fps 4K either), so you're stuck at 1080p for 3D-BD anyway. Meaning, on a passive 4K display you're not loosing any information there.
For PC games (Lol, lmao even for 3D with current gen consoles) in 3D this is still a downside, but honestly full 1080p in stereo isn't too awful.
>>717616256
>mostly died for the same reason VR has
Wat? VR is alive and well, just in an awkward state halfway between the PC enthusiast + sim equipment it was always destined to be, and being dragged into a general standalone "Smart"phone console like experience, with absolutely 1000% of all the cancer that entails, because of Facebook.

If you only count dedicated VR games as being 'real', then yeah as far as high profile AAA shit being made for it, VR's been fucked for a while.
But, even if Facebook hadn't fucked everything up, that was never a realistic expectation to have. It was always inevitably going to fall to being up to hobbyists injecting VR support into normally flatscreen games, building on top of the already existing 3D enthusiast efforts to make flatscreen 3D work, with the occasional dedicated game and shit like VRChat popping up to make full dedicated use of the hardware.
Which from that standpoint, given the options for VR hardware we have now at all sorts of price points (even ignoring Facebook and other standalone shit and just focus on the used market for old hardware), VR's been doing absolutely fantastic, relatively speaking.

I did register, I was making a point that was what it was always inevitably going to be, and as such it's as much of a success as it was ever going to be because of such things happening. Corpo types dumping millions of dollars into AAA releases isn't the end-all-be-all marker of success.
And you're thinking of NeosVR that fucked themselves with crypto bullshit and was entirely replaced with Resonite when its programmer walked away with basically the entire game along with its userbase.
Also good god no I'm not recommending VRChat, only that it's the kind of game that would naturally result in making the most of the hardware in lieu of le high profile AAA releases.

I think valve already makes more yearly revenue than nintendo, If they really want to push VR they have to realise its a software issue not a hardware one and they are the only company with the resources and the talent to make it happen. Valve should have a game development empire backing its initiatives, they could easily be funding a dozen AAA VR devs
