Yes, if you played stuff like Ace Attorney you'll probably like then, just don't expect anything like AA's court sections. The games are also all pretty short.

Nah, the most recent one only got rated 18 because of the gore later in the game, that and it has children getting beat up and covered in blood which the ESRB always gets pissy about, Ace Attorney Dual Destinies got rated M for that too.

the remakes of both games are like 7-8 hours long each, the newest one is a fair bit longer, like 13 hours.

They are decently high-budget to make up for it though. Full (japaense) voice acting for every piece of dialogue, including the protag's internal thoughts when you examine stuff, animated HD sprites, backgrounds are always well-detailed, and the music is great. The remakes even let you switch the OST of the famicom versions (and the OST of the super famicom remake of the second game)

Yeah, I loved them. But don't go in with too high expectations. Their quality is mostly their charm. They're not top tier narratives or anything, but they're definitely more interactive and easier reads than a lot of VN slop.

No. 1+2 remake kills the vibes of a 80s Japan detective story with bad mobile game artstyle.
3 is not very good.
Play 428 or AA instead if you like detective stories.

The Girl Who Stands Behind is actually really good, highly recommend it if you like mystery ADVs. Ideally play in Japanese to avoid NoA's trannylation if you can though, the Japanese in these games is not that hard and they're fully voiced with furigana too

Considering these games are probably the only thing saving MAGES from bankruptcy we'll probably get more. Sakamoto seemed like he was trying to groom the co-director into continuing the series as well so it can continue without him.

No, they're adventure games. Visual novels weren't created until 1997, Famicom Detective Club released in 1988 and the remakes are faithful to the originals.

It was the 7th most popular game on the Nintendo Power kiosks 2 years after it's release, so I doubt it sold poorly among people who used the kiosks, but obviously it didn't sell a whole lot in general since not many people uses those kiosks anyway. That was the late 90s, most gamers had moved on from the SNES.

The only jap physical version was a special edition so I think they weren't expecting the remakes to sell that well even in Japan, but seems like they sold well past Nintendo's expectations if they were willing to make physical versions of Emio.

Typically newor unknown Nintendo IP's don't perform well in the west, they probably didn't think it was worth the cost of creating a physical copy. Even in Japan the physical copy was limited to the collectors edition.

I got the collectors edition (I live in Japan) and it was well worth it.

>I don't know why Nintendo never bothered to make an ENG physical. I'm sure more people would've bought the remakes.
Genuinely the main reason I skipped the remakes, I never buy anything digital unless it's under 30 bucks, and the Japanese copies are one of the only Nintendo games that doesn't include international support natively, I think the Warriors games are the only other ones. My Japanese is a bit too mediocre to play through a VN blind, let alone 2. Bought Emio's special edition in a heartbeat though, and it was pretty great even without playing the first two.

I tried playing them in Japanese at launch. I put the video signal from my switch through my PC using a capture card, I scanned text with OCR and looked up unknown words using Yomichan but it was way too tedious so I gave up around chapter 4. But this year I played it again right before the switch 2 released and I was able to at it without lookups and it was so enjoyable.

The first one was pretty disappointing and I didn't finish the second one. I did play that Hokkaido Serial Murder Case game, which I think was by the same guy who did FDC, and that was also underwhelming. The mysteries just kind of solved themselves and it never really felt like you were making any logical deductions.

They are in a comfy traditional VN kind of way. You can tell where Phoenix Wright got its inspiration from. Don't expect some wacky time travel matrix twists that come out of nowhere but it's actually refreshing for this genre.
