Death is still very brutal and something to seriously fear, but it's not permanent and you won't lose your 10+ hours of progress which is a massive improvement.

Fun fact, the original Rogue wasn't alweays meant to be a permadeath game.
Originally, it was meant to be an RPG with checkpoints where you can save, but some black jew kidnapped the devs family and forced him to turn the game into permadeath or he would kill them. The jew did this because he was working for a rival game company that was threatened by Rogue, so he blackmailed the dev to make the game permadeath so it is a lot less fun to play than if it wasn't so it wouldn't be competitive to his companies games.
