So the game loop seems to be something along the lines of playing the story until you hit a stats brick wall, grind for a few hours in item world, go back to story and win by throwing your busted Laharl in the middle of ennemies, try to have your underleveled party members get a few crumbs of exp from nearly dead mooks, add some transmigration and equipment upgrades along the way and you're set.

It's a bit jarring because the prep time to progress the story takes comically longer than making said progress. Like, just the fact than a a single 10-floors item world session can take more time than an entire chapter feels wrong. I don't mind grinding but in this game it seems the grind IS the point. And while I can appreciate the sheer freedom allowed in how you raise your characters, I can't shake off this dreadful feeling that the game is fundamentally designed to waste my time.

The item world is mostly post-game content. I wouldn't bother with it until you get most of the way through the main story aside from the mandatory item world section.
Usually there are a few dedicated grinding stages in the main story. If it's a level that has enemies in lines or groups with bonus EXP geo panels then you should consider leveling your characters a bit on those stages.
The EXP curve in Disgaea is a bit unintuitive at first since the required experience for the next level scales exponentially from 1-99 until it drops off and starts scaling linearly after that. So in the early game it's a better use of your time to spread out EXP across your team.
If you haven't already, try making some new units at the Dark Assembly since leveling up the generic humanoid classes is how you unlock most of the better unit types. Then you can reincarnate your units into those better classes, or just make new ones.

The main story isn't that long and you can get through it with minimal grinding if you play smart. It's the post-game content that becomes a bit of a time sink. But the point of this game is to break it and it's better to grind smarter and not harder.

generally you shouldn't have to put all that much time into grinding or item world for the main story, but you do need to really understand the geo and stacking stuff before it becomes particularly fast if you're trying to one-shot bosses before you progress. end of the day though yes, the games want you to level up and, especially if going for optional content or the crazier goals, to exploit the games to facilitate that and hopes you enjoy the gameplay combat or breaking it down like a puzzle.

Earlier Disgaea games you mostly just want to focus on 1-2 characters tops for the main story because trying to level your whole party will slow you down to a crawl. It kind of sucks but that's the way it is. Just let 1 of your favorite characters get really OP and steamroll the story so you can unlock all the good stuff like faster exp leveling maps. You'll be plowing through levels for your team pretty quickly.

Eventually in the later games they try to add features where you share exp with a small group but to me, it still isn't enough and feels very limiting.

Grinding at Mt. Ordeals is the best way. I don't remember the exact process, but you're gonna want to make a support squad of Sea Angels and stack as much XP-boosting effects as possible. Pretty sure Statisticians cap at 300, but Evilities hav eno upper limit. If you have the DLC, Prinny Hat/Prinny Instructor are indispensable for this. All else fails, you can use your auto-battle fuel. This is the only time auto-battling will come in handy, since you can't even use it in the Item World for some reason. Oh, I'm using wan2.2. The best workflow for anime-style images still uses the old lightx2v model, which leads to some artifacts sometimes. It's still worth it for the fast generation speed.
I sometimes generate at 720p (takes about 2.5x longer) and the quality is much better, but it's also more likely to cause memory leaks or even complete freezes. For fun little videos I keep the resolution at 480p because I'd rather gen more and pick the most amusing.
I'm also generating 97 frames even though wan2.2 still only natively supports 81. Again this can lead to some issues but I like having the extra second.

You need special preparations for the item world beyond just being overleveled.
Optimally you have a brawler with maximum speed and movement bonuses plus access to all skills, so he can move close to the exit tile and use his skills to punch off any enemies from it. Then you need another dude who only has movement bonuses, so he can move to the tile.

In disgaea 1 this is pretty difficult because you can't increase the movement slots for each item, so you only have like 6 or 9 extra movement depending on whether you get angel sandals or accelerators (late game). And you don't have troops who can fly over other enemies either, so you'll get blocked and have to use throwing your people into the exit tile.
So it's easier to have some high leveled dudes who can just punch out everyone. Make sure you put enemy levels to minimum as well. Raising enemy levels is only so you can gain levels faster on CoO3.

Disgaea 1 was not yet about the grind, it was about the story and the dozen endings, the grind was there as a bonus. It's all the sequels that make the grinding piss easy and the story pointless. To the point that by Disgaea 5 the game is like Farmville.

Also keep in mind that Disgaea 1-2 still had Extra Gain, ie. if you made a couple of characters with Laharl, and those pupils gain levels, Laharl will get bonus stats the next time he levels up.

So the more you grind your army, the stronger Laharl gets.
If you make Mages, create them with Flonne, so she can benefit from this too because she has very high magic stats.
I usually put all mages on Flonne except healers, and everything else including Healers on Laharl, just so Laharl can learn Omega Heal and Espoir and become pretty much self sufficient.

The fact that most of the heroines following Rozalin copy her to a degree made me appreciate her a lot more. Story is mid and plot is all over the place randomness, almost nothing is serious.
All of the characters are very flanderized and wacky even by Disgaea standards.
MC is insane and is basically a budget Laharl without the redeeming aspects, background, or growth that makes Laharl interesting.
Only sort of interesting part are the bad endings and the relationship between Mao and Beryl but there is very little of that.
Basically worst of the series by a large margin though I haven't played 6/7.

I think the issue was basically that 2 was kind of unpopular for being too serious compared to 1 so they pulled way too hard in the opposite direction on 3.

The story's got some neat twists and turns, even if it's held back by the need to justify fighting the same fucking boss in every chapter. And I genuinely consider the cast to be the best in the series apart from the original. As for whether that makes it worth playing through the game... that depends on what kind of "sale" we're talking about. I don't hate D6 nearly as much as some people, and even I would say it's an easy skip.
