Zoomer here
Anything I should know before starting this?

I beat Zero Mission and Fusion and found them both pretty mediocre as action games and wasn't a fan of shooting and bombing every surface to proceed

>Already played Zeo Mission and Fusion
>Hated the gameplay
It's more of the same, but controls worse than both of them, so good luck with that.

you should also play samus return on the 3ds since it's the prequel
keep playing until you like it, or else!

You basically ruined the experience for yourself. You should have player Super Metroid first (it also came out first). The other two are basically worse in every way and one reason for that is because they were locked to a shitty handheld device.

Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Symphony of the Night form the trio of most overrated games of all time. In truth they're among the worst entries in their respective franchises.

There are some abstract environmental puzzles that are both intentional and unintentional.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the abilities the game gives you, it can often give you some kind of advantage even if it lands you in a hilarious softlock or something.
Every metroid game that has come after super has never recreated this aspect of the game right- when they do, it's contrived, intentional, and obvious.

The main thing that isn't intuitive is that you can only wall jump while spin-jumping, which happens when you hold left or right on the d-pad while jumping. If you press up, down, or the aim buttons you'll stop spinning. Going back and forth between left and right without accidentally brushing another direction is extremely important to doing them consistently.

In general, Metroid shouldn't be approached as an action game. Enemies are either forms of attrition, environmental obstacles/resources, or sources of HP and ammo. There's a reason most metroid games have multiple abilities that one-shot fodder while making you move quickly, they aren't the point.

Also don't go into the underwater area until you have gravity suit. It's not in there.

>found ZM mediocre
You're probably not going to like Super then since ZM (and Prime 1) are the most similar games to it in the series
