Modern "3d" gpus have no concept of what 3d actually is. They are fundamentally 2d and fake depth using the z-buffer but this does not work with opaque geometry. Older games used to handle transparent effects separately but this is limiting. Modern games use mesh transparency like the Sega Saturn.

What sucks is some games even will let you turn it off but then you'll see a character's hair or something and it's totally broken without it.

I guess I won't care as much in the future once I have a really powerful GPU and I can play everything in native 4K to make it less noticeable, but it's still really retarded how they're basically forcing things on us that many people hate.
