When they started forcing you to migrate your mojang account into a microsoft account and my acc was made with a now defunct email meaning I couldn't do said migration and thus lost access to the game

i still play, but only up to the 1.12 version. 1.7.10 and 1.12 are peak for modding. Even 1.6.5 has some nice mods that were never ported, like ae1 or gt3 (although a backport is in development for 1.12). The newer versions are pure slop. currently they're adding a lot of client side features only useful for custom multiplayer servers/custom adventure maps. Servers are gonna have many new special effects to add to their slot machine simulators to get kids to spend more money than ever.

Ever since 1.13, they've made small updates whose only purpose is to keep players coming back once a year to test out the new features, then get bored again. Meanwhile, 1.12 modpacks have kept evolving to the point where they've broken the 1000+mods milestone and it keeps growing, and mods keep coming out.

Around early 2013 is when I stopped playing daily. I try occasionally to start a playthrough, but nothing beats the 2010-2012 era for me.

they added very little content. 1.18 just changed the world generation algorithm of the game, similar to the 1.7 update. the actual work of getting the new vertical biome format and raising the world build height was in 1.17, but only custom servers and data packs had access to those features.

1.16 is not really a big update either. They've changed a dimension that hadn't been touched since 2011 with the 1.0 release (excl wither skeletons spawning). The nether now makes the game much easier by allowing players to get new resources while not really increasing the difficulty. The hoglins food farm you can make after 2 hours in singleplayer is really broken, especially if you compare to previous solutions that required tens of hours of spawn proofing (e.g overworld passive mob farming). Pigling trading is too powerful. You only need gold, which the 1.16 version made way easier to find, and you don't even need to leave the nether for that. Before, it took hours to assemble the required ender pearls to get to the nether, now you can pretty easily beat the endergragon after 1-2 hours of gameplay.
