PS2 looks better and has the sexier english Jessica voice. They will tell you the replacement is close enough, but don't settle for less.

PS2 version is a completely different experience compared to the ugliness of the 3DS version. The audio is better (characters speaking, sound effects). It isn't oversaturated. Orchestrated. Actual menus with soul. Go with that one and use a cheat to unlock the Alchemy Pot immediately. Who fucking cares about QoL and having to patch in the Orchestrated tracks when the PS2 version just works. Should emulate it. Actual hardware is good too.

Anyone who complains about random encounters in Dragon Quest apparently never use Holy Water or Padfoot. Retarded.

3DS is censored, alt endings are stupid, new party members don't interact with the story.
Maybe watch the new cutscene(s?) on YouTube.

Retards like you are the reason JRPGs will never innovate and will keep treading the same archaic design choices everyone hates out of some vague sense of tradition. Fucking The Adventure of Link had pseudo random encounters and that wasn’t even a JRPG and it was on the NES
Anonymous No.717854451 [Report]
>>717853848
Blame Japs for refusing to innovate the genre. Random Encounters are fine solely in a franchise that sticks with tradition and it's roots which is Dragon Quest. You were given tools back then to alleviate it and fags still whine. I don't think it's archaic. It put a use to those items. They are basically pointless in Modern DQ. It's high encounter rates that are archaic.

Visible encounters ruined the balance of the game.
Anonymous No.717855679 [Report]
>>717852225 (OP)
PS2 version you can't see the enemies and the random encounter rate is pretty high. 3DS version is a bit more modernized and less grindy since you level up faster and can see the enemies on map. On PS2 you can barely walk without a random encounter, it's as old-school as it gets for a 3D jpg's on the PS2. And the first boss of the game requires you to grind a little bit or he's gonna destroy you. On 3DS is like playing the game on easy mode.

As someone who has played and completed both versions I highly suggest the 3DS for QoL and content. Level-5 however, did an amazing job overhauling the UI and adding cool easter eggs for the NA release
Anonymous No.717858959 [Report]
Reminder that the 3DS content is bad and some of the """QoL""" shit people go on about are outright cheats that destroy the game's balance.

PS2, the 3DS is fun for alt and challenge run but the original is the best way to play normally.

>dq8 had mandatory grinding
Lol, lmao. Tell me you haven't played the game.
The final Boss is reasonably beatable at Level ~25. That's boss EXP and some incidental random encounters with you running from most.

Visible monsters on the field changes how you play the game entirely. Dragon Quest dungeons is about resource management and random encounters designed to drain your inventory and MP. Many bosses or encounters don't offer a full heal. With visible monsters you can pick and choose what you fight. If you need exp you seek out metal slimes and use exploits to spawn them quicker.
DQXI was designed around monsters on the field and assumes you're full strength for the bosses. DQVIII not so much.

The 3DS version made some balance changes for the better and worse. Jessica's twin dragon lash is garbage for the 3DS while Yangus' hammers got buffed. There's two new characters I feel like weren't designed very well and too strong.

PS2 if you’re a graphics whore and 3DS if you want a more convenient experience. DQ8 is one of the few games I’m a graphics whore for so I usually go back to the PS2 version, but the alchemy pot being instant in the 3DS version is a fucking god send. Fuck random encounters, the alchemy pot needing a set amount of steps to create something is the actual cancer in the game.

you cannot beat the first dhoulmagus fight without grinding for group heal.

you also have to grind a bit (either for gold for heals or levels for healing spells) before completing the very first dungeon
Anonymous No.717859928 [Report]
DQ8 is beautiful for PS2 game, but I found the 3DS game better to play.
Angelo's retarded skill point gain was rebalanced on the 3DS version. If you played PS2, you probably remember how terrible his early skill gains were.
The two extra characters are cool and strong in battle. They were already in the game as NPCs, so it doesn't feel unnatural like when other remasters invent new characters. They have almost no lines, however, and it is noticeable.
I don't mind random encounters, but it is better when they are visible.

>you cannot beat the first dhoulmagus fight without grinding for group heal.
Get good, you absolute scrub.

Level 30 Multiheal is way overleveled. Use the Cheiron's Bow ~30HP party heal and items, Hero and Angelo's Midheal, or Jessica's Caduceus, are more than enough healing. If you're a scaredy puss Yggdrasil Dews cost just a single magic water to make with an infinite supply of free Ygg leaves. You can also get +30 HP for the cost of a single Prayer Ring+Life Seed and a Gold Bracer for more survivability.

1st Dhoul you kill one clone, then the main one and heal up with the Cheiron's Bow and MP up anyone below half and then finish off the last clone.

2 Chunky Cheeses for the second fight for Insulatle . Acceleratle the party, Oomph Yangus because he gets the full benefit from it while Hero's Multithrust or Falcon Slash make him a secondary target. Helm Splitter or Sap the boss, call in your monster team and then bash the boss' head in with Hero and Yangus. Defend with Jess and Angelo if you don't need to heal, oomph, sap, or acceleratle.

Not a difficult fight, you just suck ass.

The real question is English or Japanese.
And the answer is - play the japanese version because the localizers completely butchered it.

99% of the time its a weeb complaining about English translator spicing up what was originally boring or nothing dialog. Its all about accuracy when it comes to important story elements not that anime girl #37 said something quirky instead of staying silent during filler dialog. Plus its fucking Dragon Warrior. Its not that deep to be bitching about a translation.

Yeah, he's not one to spam it constantly but that's why you prioritize Sap and Oomph on Yangus over Hero and only after Acceleratle.
Acceleratle is probably the most important support spell in the game since reliably out turning the bosses with healers is how you keep the party alive at lower levels.

>>717862105
Lol, the game literally tells you to experiment, there's no penalty for it, and it gives you recipes all the time.
I guess that's not covered in whatever review you watched on youtube. Literally just play the game instead of kvetching at me on a basket weaving forum.

I want them to hear it as originally intended actually, Sugiyama composed for orchestra and the symphonic arranges were recorded before the NA release. He owned the music so he made additional profit off the orchestral recordings, which if anything are closer to the "true" intention for the tracks, you can notice it with some games more than others with added segments and melodies, like with Hero's Challenge in III, where the NES/SNES versions lack the callback to Overture, which is present in the Symphonic arrange
