Morgan just set up an experiment to see if they could not make the dangerous alien predators Alex was experimenting on slightly less dangerous. The event happened because Alex and his team became complacent and stopped exercising due diligence in hires and security procedures.

I've always thought it started under their dad and both Alex and Morgan just got the operations handed down to them with all the extractors and gulag prisoners attached. Zombies and humans have different clothing/faces/eye colors and zombies depending on the game have different variants while in prey they are all just different forms of the same black goo. Sure the enemy types different but visually its one of the few glaring issues with the game. Take L4D for example, all the infected have varied looks and all the special infected have extremely stand out looks that make them unique.
