I completely understand people not liking OT1. I did enjoy it, but it was mediocre in numerous ways.
Octopath Traveler 2 is fucking fantastic, and a tremendous improvement over 1.

Iโ€™ve played so many, and I think this is one of if not the best. Unironically put FF7 Rebirth at the top as well.

People who bitch about rebirth either havenโ€™t played it or suck at the combat. I do with the stagger time was longer though and that there were less minigames

Do you still get 1 character at a time and the whole game your party is unevenly leveled and you're locked out of subsequent chapters of the character's story so there's at least a 5-10 hour gap between progressing in their story and depending on how often you play you might have completely forgotten each character's plot?

The dungeons are dogshit. Fucking dq on the nes had more complex dungeons.
Copypasted hallways with the occasional hidden chest doesn't cut it.

Mostly. Chapters aren't locked but you will be overleveled the entire game even if you take normal steps to mitigate it.
But don't worry, the stories are bad anyway and culminate in a big wet fart.

>can't change lead character until you finish their story
>complete her story (in my case, the assassin girl)
>you are now level 50
>now do the basic quests for the other storylines

what were they thinking?

I might give it a look if that's the case. I fell off OT1

The game is ridiculously easy for at least 50% of the content to the point where I stopped playing even though the story was fine and even good sometimes. That's the problem you get with 8 different branches of story that level you up and for that fact alone I wouldn't deem it the best jrpg.

My biggest problem with OT1 was how formulaic and repetitive it was
>go to town
>watch cutscenes
>exit in southeast part of town leads to an extremely short and linear dungeon
>fight boss
>cutscenes

Did 2 improve on this? I couldn't bear to beat OT1, I really tried. I got throguh most of the final chapters of each character.

Crystal Project destroys this game. I'm glad the dev is making a sequel.

>>717894706
No, it's the same dogshit except sometimes some of the cutscenes have 2 characters.

I wish classic mode from FF7R was used as a framework for XVII.
I'm fine with everyone shuffling around and doing miniscule auto attack damage if ATB commands carry the actual flow of the combat.

That's too bad, because I'd rather have a linear story with a good plot and characters than whatever nasty hybrid this game is trying to pull. It's pretending it's not linear by letting you progress with the 8 characters in the order you choose, but that just takes a linear story and mixes it around, and the story suffers as a result.

It's almost like turning a cozy, grindy, slow-paced franchise into action combat dodge or die rollslop would meet negative reception. Who would've fucking thought?

Every HD-2D game is either one of these shitty games with multiple smaller stories, a remake, or a tactics/strategy RPG. Why don't they just make a normal fucking turn-based RPG with this engine? The new one they just announced is a Zelda clone. I really don't get it.

I hate Octopath.
They made a game where every character is intended to be a unique person strongly defined by their class and abilities.
Instead of fleshing out each character's kit they kept them bare bone and then homogenized the hell out of it by slapping an arbitrary job system over the entire thing for no reason.
This series has no fucking identity. Instead of commiting to its own premise it tries to be another Bravely Default and fails at both fronts.
