Companions are a weak part of New Vegas to me. Most are either boring or just ok. I personally like Raul because with him you can care less about equipment degradation, but even then.
I tend to prefer using JIP companions mod and just recruit some random NPCs, depending on what I am doing and what I am roleplaying at the moment.

I found him to be pretty boring, but I always do the quest because it's great world building. Sometimes you need a king of the hill type beat.
My favorite companion however in fallout NV was Raul, and probably my favorite companion in the series.
Like getting called boss, boss. Option to make him a vaquero or mechanic also fit numerous types of play styles.
