There was something deeply immersive about those games. The art, the music, the sheer handcrafted feel of it all. The way they made you slow down and really soak in every detail, engage with the wolrd on your own terms. They didn’t need flashy mechanics, just well-crafted worlds and stories that unfolded at your pace. It’s rare to find that kind of depth in modern games where everything moves so fast and demands instant reactions and gratification.

Once graphics got better and devs didn't have to rely on prerendering to make stuff look nice they got replaced by action adventure games and, to a lesser degree, by hidden objects games and room escape puzzles. Interestingly enough, there's a fair number of adventure games coming out on mobile phones.

1 and 2 are still the best.

Beneath a steel sky is amazing too. Lure of the Temptress is good too but to a lesser extent.

Revolution Software were at the top of their game during those years.

Then they were forced into going 3D from publishers and their lead writer and the architect of Broken Sword and BASS left the company after BS2 and Charles Cecil started shoving his name in typeface across the credits.

Enjoy your goat jokes and self-referential "humour" and nostalgia pandering.

It's the whole of retro games. They'll always be pale imitations of older games.
>old game: uses low res 2d graphics due to technical restrictions
>retro game: uses low res 2d graphics because they desperately want to copy an old game
To use a 4chan buzzword, retro games don't have the SOUL of old games. They're poor facsimiles of better media, rather than examples that can stand on their own.

Yeah their look was a result of limitations, but also (retrospectively) those graphics have a certain charm, that's why pixel art games still exist even though there's no need for them. If you want games that need the latest GPU then you can simply look at the TripleA industry.
