The game is contentious and even 15 years later I'm still pissed at it, but the soundtrack is truly great and very distinctly iconic to me. How would you even call this particular style of music that permeates the game?

You could argue 13 has the best aesthetics in gaming. I think the fact that its very difficult to name media products that, well, look similar to it, just goes to show how unique it is.

Why? Market became heavily oversaturated with open world games. Nothing wrong with a more focused, linear game. The problem with FF13 was it pushed that towards the extremes.

>15
>trash tier open world game designed around on-rails travel with linear hallway chapters that get patched with slightly more playability years after release
>16
>failed hub world game with nothing to do in the large zone areas that aren't hunt arenas and linear hallways you will never see again for anything but a single obligatory story sequence
maybe if they made a game like XII or X again people would notice less that they're constantly failing to find a balance for the exact same shit every time?

Masashi Hamauzu has a very distinct style and I love it. Otherworldy, but still melodic and easy to like. Still love his original rendition of Besaid Island and a few his tracks in FF7 Remake.

FF13 was the last Final Fantasy feeling game from them. Yeah the story was bad and the corridor gameplay sucked. But it truly felt like an FF game. FF15 didn't. FF16 was just edgy Game of Thrones.

That would have required for the team to have an actual vision for it. Nomura reportedly kept changing his mind about it constantly.
Would have been nice to get a more complete XV though. Many things from the rebrand reveal never even made it in.

It didn’t feel like an FF game at all. FF means a cast of memorable and likable characters whom you care about and good story. This had none if that.

I think people don't give the story enough credit. Its biggest problems are the lack of explaining itself, and sometimes they turn the melodrama just a bit too far, leaving some scenes a bit silly. But the worldbuilding is really unique, and it was a great subversion of classic FF without feeling like it hated the series (cough cough xvi). I also like how the cast weren't best buddies immediately, it made their character arcs a lot more satisfying because they were all such assholes in the beginning.

>How would you even call this particular style of music that permeates the game?
Progressive electronic (combines synth music with classical music). Though XIII's soundtrack is specifically choir based, and there's no specific widely used name for that. Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex Human Revolution have vaguely similar sounds
