One of the most interesting game system ever (the entire M.e.r.c system) and one of the most ball bustingly hard strategy games ever
Pro-tip, don't play on sci fi (it actively makes the game worse) and realize that night time is your friend (most of your starting weapons are short ranged, making them far better for night ops that day ops)

Best military-themed 80's-90's action movie writing ever. Nothing will ever come close to the dialogue and quips from the characters. Too bad the writer (Shaun Lyng) disappeared from the face of the earth. JA3 ended up with all that "safe" humor without him.

I'd start with novice if I was you. Download 1.13 mod, it makes everything better. Dont take sci-fi, pick realistic. Sci-fi gives rocket rifles from a hidden base and makes a massive bug attack on Drassen. Create your own merc at I.M.P, with 1.13 you can create multiple. You need leadership and wisdom to create militia, which you abdolutely have to train after you've taken towns. Talk every civilisn you see that has a name, prefer friendly and direct. Start these discussions with your main merc. All towns have side quests that affect yoir reputation, whivh gives you more money from mines. Always talk to mine supervisor. The enemies scale the more you take cities and they WILL counterattack. Get steroid at the start, good marksmanship and godtier mechanical skill.

Easy or bad time depending on how much time and effort are you willing to put into learning fine nuances of the controls and gameplay mechanics. It's like 30% common sense squad strategy (cover, lines of sight, flanking and ambushing), 70% knowing what the game lets you get away with (stealth, handling rooftops, cleaning corners, crouching a crawling in/around terrain, backstepping and sidestepping, night fighting, when and how to melee, mercs interactions).
The game will tempt you to savescum, don't fall for it.

Sounds like a skill issue. If you'd have played the game further before getting filtered by Drassen, Alma at latest.
Turn on the option that the enemies drop everything that they have.

One of the best games ever made that still hasn't been topped to this day.

Also hard as balls if you don't cheese it.
Don't start with 1.13
It adds 5 million mechanics that are barely documented into a game that already has quite a bit of complexity. Play through vanilla, then if you want more, try 1.13.

I remember playing it as a kid with my bro, it was definitely hard but damn fun. I remember after hiring tons of cheap mercs and pitting them against each other quite a lot for the hell of it, we basically found Deidrienna by randomly exploring every map and then using grenades and explosions to breach the palace and kill her. That was the only time we ever completed the game.

If you want to read through legitimately dozens of pages worth of settings and mechanical changes that'll contain spoilers and be full of shit you won't even understand since you never played the game, yeah.
Just slap a widescreen patch on it and play the game normally.
90% of the additions and changes in 1.13 are shitty gimmicks like infiltration/disguise shit that you'll never use anyway, or guns that function exactly the same as the other gazillion guns in the game.

>fixes bugs
There's Straciatella for that.
>everything else
You're arguing about whether or not someone playing the game for the first time should experience it the way it was meant to be played or should they play a completely different version. Do you also recommend someone who wants to try DOOM for the first time to go straight to Brutal Doom ? And actually using the "enemies drop everything option", Jesus.
The first town a person discovering the game will liberate will be Drassen, at which point they'll ask themselves what the fuck is going on. There's countless of noobs posting about it because of the mindset of starting with 1.13. This isn't even talking about new systems that are specific the 1.13 only that aren't explained anywhere but in the mod's documentation.
Anyway, it's always the same debate. At this point telling people to start with JA3 might be doing them a favor.

Reminder that this game has like 100 mercs, each with dozens and dozens of lines, special interactions, lore, and unique VA.

And this was a game released in 1999, by a tiny Canuck developer. Remember that next time you play some AAA slop with like 6 voice actors total that aren't even putting any effort.
They truly don't make them like they used to.

Are Blitz games good or are they jank ? (like playable jank or unplayable) and if they have mods to fix the jank.

Those screenshots are from hidden stroke, which is a mod for sudden strike 2, but blitzkrieg is pretty fun. They're usually on sale for like $5 or less on gog.

Do I need any mods or patches or just the base game from GOG is good?

I don't play with any but you have to realize the games are kinda niche. If you're not into them vanilla then you're not going to like them even with mods. Sudden strike imo is better anyways.
The best mods for sudden strike are RWM and hidden stroke 2 or 3

Never, ever play 1.13
Its an unbalanced mess that expects you to have played JA2 at least ten times first.

Aren't they significantly different games? I only remember not being interested in a Sudden Strike game at all for whatever reason.

Anyone play the newest one? I forgot it came out, I was waiting for it to get some sort of mod support. At least the soundtrack is good
