The gameplay is fine but it suffers from the Nintendo Asterisk problem. There's always an asterisk with Nintendo games and it makes them fatiguing to keep buying and playing. Like here's the new Mario Kart, the gameplay is GOATed and allows for more skilled play than ever, but
*the actual content of the game - the racetracks - is now treated like secondary content to new content nobody wants or cares about
**the online experience is trash and the only way you can enjoy the content is by using discord

It's fucking always this way with their games lately.

Most character unlocks being a completely random in race event is asinine, we all agree racing on a highway sucks, no game is worth $80 and if one was it certainly wouldn't be MK, but all that aside it's one of the better entries in the series

Mario Kart, and most racing games for that matter, are built around a "multiple lap" structure for a reason. There's a skill in learning and navigating the tracks and going around multiple times adds a dynamic element to the race where lead racers try to maintain their lead and others look for opportunities to catch up. You can throw in items and crazy tracks on top of it, but at its core, that's what Mario Kart has been since the very beginning on the SNES. Upending the table and throwing all of that out of the window to try and force an open world racing game feels like a very bad side of Nintendo that we've seen before where they try to force innovation for the sake of innovation. Not every fucking game needs to be open world - especially not your kid friendly, item heavy kart racer that has followed a 3-lap structure for 35 years. All of that to say - open world was a mistake and intermissions were a mistake, and then doubling down to force people to play your shitty intermissions is a mistake on top of a mistake

They were so preoccupied with whether they could they didn't stop to ask themselves whether they should. They asked themselves, what if we let players drive off the track and explore the environment and they didn't think what they were going to do from there. Beyond banal collectibles and simple missions (which don't have rewards and don't have any tracking or QoL) there's just empty fields as far as the eye can see.
The new tricks are so often speed neutral it's unclear why you'd even bother aside from taking specific shortcuts in time trials which, in the first place, are just that, shortcuts, the prime and only way to express skill in a Mario Kart. Being unable to play classic GP online is just retarded. Knockout Tour is a great addition but why the fuck is it limited to eight possible courses when there could be literally dozens and dozens of combinations? This game is what happens when devs don't walk out of their office and ask someone not working on the game "hey, what do you think?"

Nintendo has this very deep seated jap dev insecurity where they insist that what they serve you has to be consumed and enjoyed in the specific way they envision. Since they spend a good chunk of dev time on these intermission tracks and the open world shit in general that is what the player has to experience. It is unfathomable that the customer does not care for the intermissions because they put them in the game and that's what you have to experience. They could just easily let you only play regular 3 lap courses but what would happen to the importan intermission tracks then they spent so much time on? It's also why all "extra" content is just superficial bullshit like stickers or costumes. A secret level the player could miss out on if he's not good enough or doesn't pay attention? That doesn't fly.

Well it's not even just that but in general. Like take Bananza as another example. It's a fun game with fun smashy smashy mechanics but
*it's even piss easier than Mario Odyssey and you have to play through piss easy mode the whole game to unlock some actually baseline challenging content
**DK's redesign is retarded
***it has the usual Nintendo problem of being designed around stumbling into everything like Forrest Gump which means there's no level design or structure of any kind of substance, you have to make your own fun

Just always an asterisk it's tiring.

Calm down, it's not that serious. They probably haven't finished building out the world yet and are going to install more of those trailer portals in places so that when you're playing intermissions there's incentive to explore. Heck, as someone who doesn't have a Switch 2 yet but does have a firm grasp of Nintendo's meta, I bet this is already the case, and just the lot of you are too lazy (see scaredy-cat) to do this when rank is on the line. I know you even better than you know yourself.

Takes too long and makes the intermission feel useless because the actual race is still happening on 3 laps. Whereas if you intermission + one lap on a regular track now the intermission is 2/3 of your full race instead of 1/4 and is more important. I bet if Nintendo could they wouldn't have even put proper lap tracks in the game but they probably felt like people are so used to that idea they still "had" to put them there as a concession.

Well it both does and doesn't that's the asterisk. Engaging with the level design and intended routes actually feels more optional than just doing the obvious thing and punching through walls or using your bananzas to get everywhere. Ostrich in particular ruins everything it's a joke. They put clear intended paths and piss easy platforming challenges in their levels but you have to go out of your way to engage with it. It's the exact opposite of how they used to design games where they could be broken but you had to go out of your way to do it.

Open world meant all tracks had to be accessible to explore and they couldn't do anything fun as a result. They also had to be within the world built around them and you don't have anything fun like Waluigi's Pinball. Number of racers increased but the items are dull as shit. Overall a really boring experience.

I HATE having to keep drawing comparisons to this, but when a $0 game is doing it better than your 80 Dollar one You know youve got problems, Ninty.

>NO volume slider options.
-This is the 10th Mario Kart now and we STILL cant disable the sfx or turn off the voices so we can just hear the Music. Speedstorm lets you do this
>the feather is being an Item at all
-Why can't have the feather's jump as a separate button? In Speedstorm you can jump whenever the fuck you want. Mario, the man known for FUCKING JUMPING still wont let you jump in karts, and No, I dont mean that sad little hop, ACTUAL jumping like MICKEY'S!!!
>The Roster
-Disney is pulling deep cuts in there game. Nintendo? They resorting to using generic enemies when you've got SO MANY actual named characters you could use. We've got Chip & Dale this very fucking season and what's MKWorld doing? Putting in fucking COWS! I cant believe I actually miss the Koopalings, but they were a step above bats and crabs.
>Events
-In the Disney Kart, there's thing I can do everyday in the game, keeps me turning the game on daily. In Mario Kart, there ain't fuck all to do once you've unlocked everything. What happened to the Competition Mode from Wii? bring that fucking shit back already-god damn!!!

There's more, but I don't feel like listing more grievances. To sum it up, They really shit the bed with this entry of mario kart. Heck I actually had more fun with Mario Kart Tour....the gosh darn Mobile Game!

Learning that Nintendo devs are not the pragmatic, rational, professional, dignified men in nice suits I assumed they would be when I was a kid but rather that they are essentially teenage girls trapped in the bodies of old men is a tough black pill that I have to remember to swallow every now and then and their handling of MKW is a particularly disheartening example of that. Call me clueless about video game history outside of Nintendo but their response to the poor reception of the intermissions shows such a blatant lack of grace and humility which confuses me since honor is such an integral value in Japanese culture. Fuck man, at this point it would be more dignified to simply let people pick 3-laps.

I really don't think it's disdain. People underestimate how out of touch Nintendo really is. The company is run by dinosaurs who have NO idea what is going on in the industry or in players' minds.
Up until just a few years ago, ideas for game design/mechanics were submitted in written form on a little sheet of paper and dropped in a box like Homer Simpson asking for no more apples in the vending machine. I heard a story about a Western translator at a Nintendo Japan meeting. He was there with an American guy who was explaining to the execs that they need more robust online features and player options and kept citing how PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam were trouncing them with regards to online. He was taken out of the meeting and told to stop mentioning the competing platforms because literally no one in the room had ever used any of them and had no idea what he was talking about.
They just have no fucking idea about what their audience wants from them and they don't care. It's why we have all these INSANE decisions like
>should we let the players race on 3 lap tracks because they don't like our open world
>>no give them more open world tracks
while also having
>hey should we make a stupid and bizarre crippled robot basketball game to show off our new hardware?

-Poor online
-Forced to play garbage linear highway tracks
-Track design was heavily constrained by all needing to fit into a seamless world in a cohesive manner

The honor culture is the problem. When you tell a master chef that their food is bad, or that the master potter's pots suck, or any other person that's an authority on a matter that they're wrong, to them that's not a valid complaint but an insult. What do you know? You aren't the master, you're a nobody. You're directly challenging their work, honor culture doesn't apologize it doubles down.

Posts like >>717952039 are precisely the problem. People really do defend Nintendo with religious-like zealotry. They will say Nintendo's decisions are perfect and great even when they are demonstrably not.
I like Nintendo games. All I use these days is my Sw2. I don't play anything else. But I don't defend their awful practises. They really fucked everyone in the ass with their decision to remove players' ability to choose a 3 lap track online in Mario Kart World. I really can't think of the last time I felt this genuinely insulted by a faceless game company. It's like they saw that I was enjoying their game and then told me I'm not allowed to play it like that. It was such a slap in the face it boggles my mind.
