finally found an SRPG with original mechanics rather than just being a copy and paste of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Christ, you can copy PS1 games all you want but you can also try to improve them, but hardly anyone ever does.

That's right, but you really should have noticed that I also didn't tell you what it actually did that made it better.

They did away with the dumb/tedious "click on a unit and click where it goes" system. Now, you can take control of the unit and just move like a normal person where you want to go, although you are still bound by a movement range. It's so much simpler. why doesn't anyone else do it.

That's not an fft thing. That's something literally every single srpg did from old to new

I know. They're all fucking idiots. It's unbelievable. It happened with survival horror too. A few games actually tried something different than tank controls. They actually included both control schemes so you can just switch on a whim. The d-pad does the classic tank controls and the analog sticks do free form movement so you can swap depending on the situation. Maybe a boss fight where you can see the whole screen at once would be better with analog sticks so just move you fingers and you're good to go, don't have to go into the menu and swap.

Bro, Phantom Brave did this in the PS2 era.

My idea was for an open world SRPG, so you actually run around an open world map instead of just going from battles to battles. This would let you plan your battle and play to your play style. For example, you need to infiltrate a heavily guarded manor surrounded by a moat. You can initiate battle on the bridge and rush the guards, hoping the narrow bridge limits the amount of units that you face at once, or you can sneak around to find the least guarded point and hope you can take out the small amount of guards before the rest of the back-ups make it in time, or you can create a distraction outside the manor, drawing the guards out and use nearby buildings for the terrain advantage to take potshots at the guards as they cross the bridge. It would also lead to interesting situations where you need to make it across a foggy battlefield but the limited view means new enemies and obstacles are constantly coming into play as you traverse. Stuff like that.

Because that system is utterly retarded on a grid. You aren't using the grid and it's slower than tapping while also being less precise if you value which direction the unit faces. It is like Phantom Brave, but PB doesn't use a grid overlay like you are attempting.

Some games do that. It's also slower.
