Why does every PC gamer have a FPS meter on their screen?

They don't. I never want to see my FPS, because I think it'd be distracting. HOWEVER, I do play with my ping visible in Dota 2. It's really important to know whether I'm lagging or not. The people who play with FPS shown are just flexing on you.

confirmation of my suspicion of performance and helping me gauge if I need to drop the settings, or if I can increase them.

i turned it on for something and im too lazy to turn it off

i will toggle it on if i feel like im dropping frames but usually i just ignore it

If this conclusion is based on Youtube videos people there often display performance data as it gives viewers numerical values about the game's performance.
