It's a good game but Kamiya couldn't help but shove it full of dumb bullshit like insta QTEs and obnoxious gimmick sections.
Also I don't like how weapons work compared to other action games like DMC. Almost every weapon is a modifier on the base moveset rather than being completely unique. There's also a lot of pointless moves.
Also the story is poorly told. Way too many cutscenes, most of which are low budget slideshows. A ton of expository dialogue yet the plot is still poorly explained. Could have edited the script down significantly to the point that the only cutscenes would be fully animated.

2 is an improvement presentation-wise but a step backwards gameplay-wise because they have too much importance to witch time, which you could entirely forego in the first game
the third game was a mess because the game they originally wanted to make wouldn't run on the switch, and then the production ran into several more issues like losing the motion capture actress that gave bayo her signature movement style, and then her english VA

2 and 3 ease up on this a lot, QTEs are entirely gone and the bosses are better designed, the static cutscenes are still there but they aren't as long or heavyhanded, and then there's origins which is like 99% gameplay.

Yes, but back when 1 and 2 came out everyone just said that the story was meaningless and didn't detract from the game as it was just a framing device for the gameplay, but come 3 everyone suddenly started saying how the story was just a complete deal-breaker.
