It's not the big retail prices of the AAA guys, so on a macro level the "big hitters" are selling less (excluding Nintendo and a handful of indie "kings" [stardew valley, balatro, anything toby fox etc]).

Also a lot of peoople just tend to buy (or pirate) a game like Minecraft and put thousands of hours into it. It might be TF2, it might be fightcade, it might be Terraria, it might be Skyrim etc. I think with the slowed output that from the big studios where many of the games that do release wind up like that shitty assassins creed, shitty star wars outlaw, shitty concord, shitty marathon, shitty suicide squad, and so on and so forth. Of course people aren't going to buy those shitty games. I'm sure they'll come out for something like Grand Theft Auto and then you'll see the headlines "GAMING IS SAVED!!!"

But the reason why people spend less and less and less money on videogames, is that videogames have gotten too good, and you can play them for thousands of hours without getting tired. A new videogame has to do something that will make me want to play it instead of playing Elden Ring or Smash Bros for thousands of hours more.

There's new horror games coming out all the time that capture the same feeling like Rule of Rose.

As someone that's almost 40, I often think about how good I had it growing up to how shitty zoomers and younger ones have it now.

I went from the SNES to the N64 and PS1 to the Dreamcast / Xbox / PS2 / Gamecube to the era of online gaming with the 360, PS3 and Wii by the time I was a late teen. I got to play some of the greatest games of all time as they came out, got to experience the video game industry when the people making the games actually gave a shit and put their heart and soul into the stuff they made. Yeah, it still happens today but the AAA games that exist now are products of 1000+ member teams most of them outsourcing half the game to India.

Yeah, sure the younger guys you can still play the best classic games, but you won't understand what it was like living through the evolution of video games from something so simple to fully 3D, the jump between each generation and how exciting it was, all of that is gone now because each new generation doesn't change much if anything. There's no new amazing genres of games coming out, everything is pretty derivative. I'm not shitting on all new games, there's still plenty of stuff I enjoy, but the golden age has long since come and gone.

I don't blame zoomers though, its not their fault that they reached adolescence in an era in which F2P and mobile gaming became the status quo for them. Kids that grew up from parents shoving a tablet in their hands because it was the easiest way to "parent" their children rather than letting them play outside on their own like I did, video games were a luxury for me growing up, not just because it was expensive but because my parents didn't want me to do nothing but play them all day. I host fg tournaments at a comic book shop.
