Weird that is that I read somewhere that Goths were actually famous for their cavalry.

The link between modern teen goths and historical Goths is primarily linguistic and aesthetic. The goths of today don't trace their origins to the Germanic tribes, but rather to the broader Gothic literary and cultural movements that came after. The subculture is shaped by an affinity for things dark and emotional, and its connection to the historical Goths is more in terms of being viewed as "different" or "other."

It comes from word "gothic" being linked to things that are spooky due to how gothic architecture looks, and gothic being obsolete pejorative for morbid and gloomy things because historical goths were so mean. The word "gothic" was co-opted by the 19th century proto-horror authors to describe their work, and their stories usually dealt with kind of characters and locations such as scary mansions and castles or elegant but eerie women that formed the basis for gothic aesthetic.
