To me it's the capacity to impose one's will on the world, to not let destiny or prophecy keep one from acting out. Kris is unhappy that in pursuit of this form of freedom to change the prophecy he's lost what he had in his possession. Other characters see the prophecy as a direct threat and want to rebel against it. Characters like the King, Jevil, and Spamton are extremely willful and have gone against their purpose, and have ended up either unhappy or crazy. (You) can also try to bend the world to your will but doing so is obviously evil.
I believe the message or theme will be about how putting one's will foremost, against one's purpose, will lead to worse outcomes and ironically less freedom in the end.
