I've read his kit and kind of understand how you're meant to play him and what to bring with him but I haven't gotten to use him directly yet.

Why doesn't this series treat itself seriously anymore? Lobotomy and Ruina had some incredibly dark themes, there was some humor tossed in but it was very occasional and never ruined their tone. By the time you catch up to everyone storywise, you should have more than enough resources to start sharding the fucking shit out of everything and realize you don't need to spend lunacy whatosever unless it's Walpurgisnacht. This will also prepare you for the upcoming collaboration. It will be a little frustrating, but understand the fights are all balanced around the base IDs. Keep at it, and it'll be much, much more worth the while.

Honestly, that lines up a little too well. Ryoshu as the "Dark World" mentor fits her whole obsession with aestheticized violence and death-as-art. With most other banners i'd suggest waiting for walpurg. but the current banners give you 5/6 units from the current strongest team, 1 of which cant be sharded this season.
getting hong with 4 heishou (outis isnt on the banner for some reason) is far better for new players than the collab because even 4 broken egos will do jack shit in comparison to a current season rupture team. I think you forget that for the average first time player, missing resources from having to retry stages for every other ex clear in canto 5 onwards and slogging through canto 4s part 2 encounter spam with ids that deal fuck all damage would be absolutely miserable. Not everybody wants to do a challenge run on their first time playing a game.
