Released to early. A full 3D third person action-adventure game of this type requires good input and camera controls to be fun, and very very very few games managed to do it in 1998, and even they had to settle with some massive concessions and limitations to be decent.

At the time, they could maybe have pulled of a full on adventure game, or a full on action game. But not both.

Todd thought the 1990's TES audience would want an action-adventure game with a predefined character, and he was wrong.

It wasn't that bad aside from some small technical issues. Bethesda fans aren't the brightest bunch so they just shit and piss their pants because you play as a preset character.

Like Todd said in his post mortem, it's a game that would've done better had it released on consoles instead, like Tomb Raider did on the PS1 and Saturn. The PC market interested in Elder Scrolls wasn't feeling the non-RPG adventure game with a predefined character. Its straddling of genres failed to land with an audience and the technical awkwardness of running the game in the twilight years of DOS didn't help things.

I have never played it, but Redguard also looks weird, conceptually. People were pretty accepting of weirdness back then, but the game's story sounds bizarre and the characters and themes do as well.

The controls are godawful. There's a ton to like about the game, good characters, memorable setpieces, and it's interesting because it's essentially the birthplace of "modern" TES lore, but ultimately none of that outweighs the fact that just playing the game is fucking unbearable. The game running at 30 FPS in DOS in the same year as Unreal, Half Life and Thief also didn't help matters.

While console players might have received Redguard better than PC players, I don't think it would have helped as much as you think. If anything, having to compete with other, much better action adventure games already on consoles would also torpedo its chances.
