It served it's purpose perfectly. Which was to give the player the feeling that they were leaving their tiny village which is all they ever knew, and entered a big world

It bothered me that you couldn't make it from the woods to the castle without hitting nightfall though. You're forced to hang out in front of the castle killing skeletons the first time you go into the fields.
