4chan, like any other social media site runs on engagement. And genuine video game discussion is not something that brings in the posts to threads, there's a reason 90% of this board is porn, politics or ragebait at all times.

Many anons understand this and do not even attempt to make any kind of rational discussion, instead opting for extreme hyperbole in their posts and being as abrasive as possible. Even those who do actually want to talk about a video game will sometimes resort to filling the OP post with some kind of bait just so that anons will start arguing, bumping the thread and allowing video game discussion to go on in between all the shitflinging.

Videogames "fans" nowadays don't care about games: they care about the characters.
Take the Final Fantasy VII remakes, for example. Nobody cares that they're trash, people like them because they give more time with the characters. Who cares about gameplay?
And it's the same with other franchises. Nobody wants to try new stuff because they don't know the characters, unless it's derivative. And the old franchises are run to the ground because all that matters to the normalfags is that they see the characters.

We know that games are out of place in a non-peaceful time in the world. Genuine discussions are hard as hell to find in general. You can find good ones on boards not meant for the topic because they haven't run conversations into the ground and become an incestuously mad ecosystem.

It's also "You can't go home again". The cultural environment behind conversation say back around 2012 just can't happen again. I wanna say smile because it happened don't cry because it's gone but it's really fucking hard to realize that chill culture is gone.And it will get worse, not better. Final Fantasy still gets a lot of jealousy around. Yes last games are bad, but they still get engagement and interest around them. You can give a FF a 5/10 score and flop, it will still be talked about. You can't say that to most jrpg games.
It's also a way to derail japanese having obvious problems in development, and JRPGs suffer from this the most since they are long as fuck and have to pay popular seiyuus.
