Is Dragon Quest 2 a good game? Really want to play it because I like the hero's design.

I'd say yes as long as you're willing to tolerate some obtuse world design and some REAL bullshit in the final dungeon.
But overall I'd say it's better than 3 for 90% of its runtime.

It's pretty good. I feel like it's the least liked from the first trilogy for most fans, but I think it's a good game.

If you played DQ1 and wanted a bigger, harder and more complex version of that it is the ideal sequel. The final area feels like it is scaled for 4 character but the game only gives you 2.5.

If Dragon Quest 2, a game where every single spell and gameplay mechanic works as intended and every party member fulfills the niche they were created for, is genuine kusoge then I seriously have to wonder what you think about Final Fantasy's NES and SNES output.

It's okay. It's really DQ1 but bigger (and not really better). But, where the first game is pretty short and fairly charming for what it is, the second one isn't really. Like the first game world is small, so even if the NPC aren't always very helpful, you still can figure things out. For the second game, well the world is big and knowing where you have to go and what you have to do can be pretty difficult. And then, you've got the last dungeon which is a fucking awful pain in the ass to get through.

I had a good time playing the SNES version of DQ2, until you get to the last dungeon and you need to grind forever to be strong enough to finish

Good game but it kinda sucks the endgame is grinding for several hours against enemies with instant kill spells.

It's decent until the end-game, which is well known to have been rushed in order to meet deadlines, and while remakes and rereleases have softened it up, it's still a pretty rough section of the game.
If you're not willing to wait for the latest remake in October, I honestly recommend the Mobile version, but if you want that old-school Nintendo Hard challenge, feel free to play the NES or SNES versions, or even the GBC version.

This is the game where in it's original incarnation the final boss could heal to full WHENEVER IT WANTED, and did so often.

I played the GBC version a few years ago.
From what I remember it was fun. Since it's the genesis of the series in a lot of ways it will feel even more generic than usual.

final fantasy didn't have random battles who could wipe your whole party before you even get a chance to move
>no you see its epic and hardcore to reset back to the last king you talked too which was 20 minutes of random battles ago because the diceroll decided this enemy casts kill everyone instead of normal attacking the prince of cannock and 1 shotting him again

dq 1 and 2 are just ultima but heavily watered down, at least final fantasy 1 with its literally broken spells lets you have fun if you know what spells the 1 programmer they had fucked up making and avoid buying them
