Sonic 1 has good level design that demands more from its players without being cheap bullshit. Many of the levels feature branching pathways that are worth taking and aren't just a case of "Stick to the top path lmao!", and the levels handsomely reward your curiosity and experimentation with the game's physics. While I don't like how you reach the special stages in this game (tying it to rings is fucking retarded), they're much better designed than the ones in Sonic 2, namely by being fair with its mechanics and not fucking blindsiding you just for the hell of it

It absolutely baffles me that people see this kind of level design and unironically argue that it's good. I believe the term was "Passivity Traps"? What a crock of shit
