Whyman is the petrification devices.
They petrify civilizations as a test of intelligence/brainpower.
They didn't expect humans to take 2000+ years to wake up. More intelligent species would have burned through the energy to depetrify within a few minutes of thinking.
They never meant any actual harm.

IIRC they did it to give humans the gift of immortality. They thought they were doing a good thing and were confused why humans were so pissed about it.
