Why did it suddenly become impossible to have an online multiplayer game without microtransactions and obnoxious cosmetics? How did online multiplayer games stay alive before all of this? Did they unbuyed the technology or something?

This. Unfortunately communism isnt the answer either and we seem to go in long cycles that switch between the two and when one runs it's course into oblivion the next starts the cycle over.

Back in the day game studios didn't have 6-12 subcontractors churning out nothing but assets. Gamedev used to be about system design and programming and probably still is if you're an indie but AAA is like 90% assets. That's where all the money goes. And old games had mod tools so people could make their own cosmetics and extra content.

Properly regulated capitalism is the best. The US was at its height when the top tax bracket was 90%. But then lobbyists and political donations result in politicians eroding said regulation.

Microtransactions exist because gamers desperately want them. If they didn't, they wouldn't make money and would cease to exist as a model.
