Is it really worth developing a video game as a gamer? I live in constant fear of my games being too derivative of existing properties.

Just find another interest, and then try to adapt it as a video game. It worked with Pokémon and The Sims.

If you want money and success then absolutely not but if you're fine with the high risk of wasting years of your time for a zero return then go ahead.

All games are derivative. That's how the industry works. Nobody is going to spend millions on a concept unless they are working in a small team inside of a larger studio with the sole job of creating new concepts.

it's furfag pixelshit and nothing like the digimon world games on ps1

Why not just sell people a link to the original game at the point. You are just wasting their time with slop.

Not if you're doing it for money. But if you're doing it for fun, hell yeah. Make the thing you want to see because it makes you smile, who cares if it's just game A + game B + game C?

Have interests that aren't video games too? Retro game devs were basically throwing random shit at the wall from all their favorite things. Look at Ninja Gaiden with its quarterback enemies or the random Star Wars/Trek references in Ultima

If you get sued by the games that inspired you, then it means you've hit it big because they see you as viable competition now

Just make a game for yourself. Don't make it a full time job

all people who create things have that fear, just get over it and make something
people have made better shit before you, and people will make better shit after you
the drive to create something is lost as easily as it is gained, you need to take advantage of it when you experience it

can't gain that experience, knowledge, or willingness to delve into the structure of the subject without practicing the skill
nobody deserves praise, and it isn't necessary
just make shit, fuck it up, and do it again better than you did last time
not everyone has to be a prodigy

Anon, someone made a Simon's Quest-like.
You know all those little Castlevania-like games people made?

Well someone made one like Simon's Quest. I could tell just by the poster art somehow and my first thought was, "Oh hell yeah." and I never eve beat Simon's Quest.

Nintendo kicks gamers out and as a result they have fart-sniffing retards like Tanabe in executive roles saying shit like, "What if, in my rotating puzzle game... you could rotate in another direction???" If you, as a human being, have the brain capacity to think, "I don't want to make my game too derivative." Then you're already a step up from designers right now who are in charge of 500 million dollar projects.
