In Resi 4-8, they're just testing on stupid people who are too superstitious to understand what's going on. By the end of each of the games you'll find a file that explains Umbrella is behind it all and each of the main badguys just went native and fell into the locals bullshit.

I hope they finally let go the Umbrella legacy for the numbered entries after this. They still have at least 3 more numbered titles to remake (0, 5 and re-remake in the case of 1) and even CV, they can always do a not-numbered entry for all the classic characters, including the new MC (Grace) which, from the anniversary artwork you can tell they are considerong here among the faces of the franchise.

Because they realized their gamers are mostly zoomers nowadays and for them it's not cool anymore to put deadly viruses ingame and thus implement spiritual shit now. The idea with deadly viruses came from the fact that back then, zombies were considered to be something occultistic, just like Michael Jackson's Thriller. The original team wanted a realer and better explanation and thus invented the virus outbreak and Umbrella as a cause for being a zombie.
