"search action" is terrible. Anything from Banjo-Kazooie to Resident Evil could be described as "search action".

They're not a genre, but they are all based on exploration and upgrading your toolset. That toolset is almost always a mechanical one (such as a gun upgrade), but some games that share a lot of DNA with them have informational tools that let you get places a first time player couldn't.
The design of a game being gated this way doesn't require it to be a platformer.
Metroidvania isn't a genre name, its just nomenclature for lazy people.

I think its a pretty good descriptor for those the meld both the metroid and SOTN-esc castlevania experiences; of course

is what Iga prefers, but I don't know if that works outside of a certain degree of specificity, such as those that have additional collectable equipment/upgrade/souls in a more generic fashion besides the things necessary to gate you through game world challenges. SOTN and most "Igavanias", including Bloodstained Ritual of the Night have separate optional collection of equipment, spell, soul ability etc... systems besides the double jump, block breaking, door opening etc.. style gear. For instance Shadow Complex would be described as a "metroidvania" , but it leans much more heavily to the Metroid side of things in that almost all the discrete (ie not health or ammo expansions ) upgrade and collectibles are progression/ability focused.

There are also games that are beyond the scope of even an "Igavania" style title in one way or another.

Metroid-like. Most Metroidvanias are lacking the JRPG mechanics that Castlevanias added to the Metroid formula, like enemies dropping loot/experience/coins, as well as unnecessarily complex damage formulas. Metroidvania pretty much devolved into "metroid but you use a sword instead of a gun"

The gameplay loop of Symphony of the Night is fundamentally different from Super Metroid or Hollow Knight because in those games enemies are just obstacles, whereas in Symphony of the Night enemies are a resource that you farm until you get all their drops and fill out the ???? lines on their monster glossary entries.

There's less customization and resources, even if most metroidvania's don't have full on rpg elements they often have at least currency that enemies dropped or equipment systems and so on, in metroid enemies only drop temporary resources like health and ammo.

Equipment I suppose you could say the range of equipment but it ultimately just ties in with the level and stat aspects. Anything that actually changes your skills is still Metroid since the multiple beams, screw attack etc was what you were searching for in the first place.
And if you want to be technical the morph ball is a transformation.

Everything else you said is just more of what I just said, traversing the areas to find new abilities.

The concept of "look around and figure out how to make progress" is just what oldass adventure games did, just with no combat so now it would be considered a "puzzle" game.

Those things are actually tied to progression(not considering sequence breaking). But something like the Alucard Shield do anything for progression aside from giving you an extremely broken weapon.

Most new weapons are just a stat increase, of some kind you don't really need them which is why it's rare for Metroidvanias to have equipment systems like that since it's functionally useless.
