During most of my life I had only played DK Country 2 and I always thought that in DKC1, Donkey Kong was able to do his smash up b to fly horizontally like Dixie in DKC2.
But Im playing DKC1 for the first time and I was very surprised to see he cant do that.
So where did that move come from?

Every character needed some way to recover from falling and that was all they could come up with for a character that's a big ape.

Smash has a lot of dumb made up moves like this that were never changed.
>no barrel neutral special
>no cannon barrel up special
>no coconut gun side special
>current down special should be down smash

It took them 4 games to give DK his roll what the hell was the thought process behind that

The original Smash started out with a bunch of generic characters who all had movesets based on different archetypes, then they were converted into Nintendo characters. That's why almost none of them feel like faithful adaptations. Captain Falcon is the most obvious example.
