Anybody here playing The Karters? It uses Crash Team Racing mechanics? It's basically the CTRNF PC port made by indie devs with workshop mods.

I love the mods. Truly a GMod racing experience.

I'm interested, but I feel like games like this are only fun when playing with a consistent community unless there happened to be enough single player content to make the game worthwhile. Checking the thread from last night in the archive, it doesn't look like anything happened and I'm too old to learn how to use stuff like Discord. However, how easy would it be to mod in my OC characters? That would be a big draw compared to alternatives.

Games like these are mostly fun if everybody is on the same level. If you played Crash Team Racing, you'll know that you could only have fun if you were able to maintain blue fire the entire race. Being left in the dust while the opponents beat you by minutes is obviously not the best, but some people don't mind as the driving itself is fun, skill will come as you continue to play.

Haven't tried but it doesn't seem to be THAT complicated, you have a template provided to place your character, and there's a program to help you with the rest.

It is merged with CTR, but it has Karters in the title so you can find it. I've noticed more before this one, but I have not been in them to see if they had any more traction aside from just people playing CTR.

I only played the original CTR with local friends, so I actually don't know how rough it can get when people know what they are doing. My comment comes from playing Mario Kart with /v/ where playing against the same group of people feels like it gives the game purpose compared to playing with random people I'll never see or care about again. However, things may be different if the game is designed in a way where there is a more clear progression of skill even with randoms.

Thanks for linking the mod guide. Skimming though it, making a character mod does look reasonable enough that I should be able to manage.

Ah those threads, as far as I know they mostly play CTR for PS1 because it's free.
