Honestly they're all kinda shit when it comes to the story. In which case, watch the anime instead or better yet, play any other game.
As far as gameplay goes, your best off playing a ROM hack, as the battles actual require a brain and levelling is often capped. If you must play a mainline game, I suggest any of the new ones with full team exp share, so you don't get stuck using the one pokemon who is 20 levels higher than the rest, and avoid as many battles as possible to avoid overlevelling.

Also don't listen to this retard. Soul Silver is fine until the level scaling plateaus for the second half of the game, in which the the game becomes a mind-numbing exercise of spamming A until you win.
