dude, you should look into some of the cut features of this game. think of the time it was released, the actual dev time they had to make it, and the planned features that were cut and you'll realize just how much bigger it was going to be. an example is there is leftover code that was supposed to be the first version of GTA V's three man protagonist system

The soundtrack. It and VC stood the test of time unlike IV and V which used contemporary music.

I hated how enemy gangs blend into the background in future GTA titles.
Took me a while to realize some of the fat NPCs are gang members in GTA4.

Both have a really good story and the gameplay is better in 4 but Liberty City sucks and the environment is just soulless. The NPCs/Peds are a great example. In SA they're all handmade and memorable meanwhile in 4 they're all procedurally generated.

as in physics and how the world interacts with you and vice versa which is non existent in san andreas. all you do is fly your planes over barren landscapes with nothing in them. san andreas in a nutshell, same with the swimming, wide as an ocean deep as a puddle.

I don't know if it's me personally, but I had gta 2, 3, vice city, 4, and 5 as more memorable games than san andreas. It seemed like a bloated game even back when it released. I dunno, I don't ever want another black main character for GTA.

Games back then were mostly around developing forward, it was an innovation to have the player get fat if eating a lot in a sandbox shooter, it was innovative to have multiple big cities in a single map, it was innovative to modify the car, it was innovative to change every piece of clothing... all these features were new to the genre (not to gaming but to this particular genre). Its rare to have big features nowadays that are new to the genre, they already showed up in some other game and are only now being mixed up with others.

Rockstar and the franchise started it taking itself too seriously with IV. III was an over-the-top take on the mob genre. Vice City did the same for the 80s. SA did it again for hood movies. With IV, the devs decided they didn't want to just make homages, they wanted to create something that could stand alongside the media that inspired them. IV was their serious attempt at that.

Things changed at Rockstar and V is a little different. V is more of a conscious GaaS concept. It's much less of a statement and more of a blatant product. VI will turn that up to 11, but for the post-2020 social media environment. It's designed for social media content creation and very aware of V's success at monetization. There are going to be people who are baby youtubers and twitch streamers right now who will be millionaires after VI comes out. It's a game designed to do that.
