I think the emotional distance probably has more to do with him being a mouthbreather or basement-dweller than it does any kind of malice on his own part. This is incredibly normal. Basically anyone with COPD gets told to stop smoking by their doc with the complete understanding that they will do no such thing, and that giving up smoking at that point gives you a handful more years at BEST. Usually they still die when expected even if they quit and are miserable. Lifelong smokers who try to quit are a bitch a half to live with, so it's most common for their kids to go ahead and buy them smokes when they're in bad enough shape they can't even do it themselves anymore.

Even when Biden did that via hand-wave at the end of his term, the majority of those only applied to people that had attended colleges that no longer existed. Basically fake-ass diploma mills that were scamming kids into attending by promising them some kind of special hiring program or network connection that didn't exist. The schools went broke once people figured it out but the kids that attended were still on the hook for their loan despite having a diploma from a college that no one was able to look up or had ever heard of.

And even then, it was a relatively small number of kids and only applied to certain types of federal loans. He ended up forgiving $183.6 billion, which sounds like a lot but was out of $1.661 trillion. About 9% of the outstanding federal student loan debt at the time. So yes, some people did get out of it, but it was a pretty small group. Most Americans have to pay it all back (and do, or they wouldn't be givin out loans).
