There's a heavy gear 3 coming out now. It's probably the closest modern game to votoms you're gonna get.

Lost Planet 2 has a vital suit called the Bleed and you can slap a Pile Bunker on it. Hell, one of the bosses rewards you for hitting it with it three times.
