Unicron Overload
Just dusted the ol Switch browsing the eShop and noticed that this game is on sale for 24 bucks. Saw a lot of praises for it last year but it kinda faded away over time. Looked it up in the archives and apparently it's super easy but aren't all JRPGs easy? Like Persona and Final Fantasy are easy, but they're still decent fun.

I played the demo and I think I like it but I can't tell for sure just yet.

Worth getting? Is it f u n?

It's comfy, it's easy like you said same as Fire Emblem etc. I would put it on Tactical or above. It's all very straight-forward story wise etc but enjoyable still.
Anonymous No.720118985 [Report] >>720119130
If you have a PS4/5 this game was added to PS+ for "free" so must be the reason its also on sale.

This kind of games lives in a sort of limbo where they're developed so a player could finish them with more or less a decent and varied army but these are games played by certified spreadsheets neckbeards who are capable and willing to squeeze every extra +0,1% so they end up feeling too easy for their niche audience.

I downloaded to try it out and have to ask, why are all vanillaware games this fucking boring bros? all they have going for it always is the visuals alone since story and music are never that great.

It's not a JRPG.

Outside of artwork, all of their games are pretty basic genres yeah I agree. I've always seen them similar to Dragon Quest studio, where they've always kept their games strictly to a basic JRPG etc. Might be a Japanese thing.

It's not just that it's easy, but that it's very samey over it's rather long run time.

The fun is largely in tinkering with your formations and making ones that are really stupid overpowered and then steamrolling everything.
But how long can you draw out that fun before it starts to lose its luster?

easy and samey
that can describe every single vanillaware title.
their games are just visual novels with some extra steps in the end.

It won "best visual aesthetics" and "Best writing" in last year's /v/gas so yes it's pretty dang good. Even second place in "Least Worst" losing only to Balatro.

This is wild because Unicorn Overlord has incredibly boilerplate writing for both the main plot and most of the character writing.
Anonymous No.720120570 [Report]
>>720118716 (OP)
Typically vanillaware games have some kind of late game grind because they have to justify making the assets but Unicorn Overlord instead just takes long to finish for how simple the systems and story are. The game plays itself and you'll probably have a setup that can clear the game 15 hours before credits. If you don't mind all that it's worth it for the visuals alone.

/v/gas awards also gave "Most Likely to Cause Heart Palpitations" to a hentai clicker game and "Best Multiplayer" to a Discord mod powertrip simulator, so maybe take those with a grain of salt, yeah? Unicorn Overlord is solid if you're into min-maxing tactics and anime archetypes eating stew for three consecutive cutscenes. Writing’s fine if you're nostalgic for ye olde fantasy melodrama, but "best"? Eh. At least it doesn’t insult your intelligence like some modern AAA slop.

The fun is in learning the game mechanics and making interesting combos. I don't think people are wrong when they say it's easy, but that's only half the picture - fun isn't a function of mere difficulty.
I tried every class in the game at least once. I played the demo 3 times, figuring out the most optimal route through it and finally beating the first Galerius fight in one round. I beat Amalia with level 20 units in one run (took her to 0 HP). I did a run where I went to Bastorias for my 2nd region.
Game is full of soft challenges like that but if you find the one thing that works for you and then cruise through on autopilot, yes you will bore yourself to death because it isn't that hard to simply win.

Basically what this anon said >>720119054, the challenges are implied rather than forced so the game can actually be winnable by non-autists.

Well it's definitely GOTY of 2024 which isn't saying much. It is a game that's polished and fun. It gets better if you start tinkering with builds and watching your teams fight each other. I must have spent hours just watching my own guys counter my own strategies.

It's a great game. It is easy, but it's actually still more difficult than the game it's primarily inspired by (unless you count all the obscure bullshit you have to do to get some of the endings in Ogre Battle as difficulty, anyway.)
Anonymous No.720129939 [Report] >>720132460
I have over 200 hours in Unicorn Overlord over two playthroughs. The tinkering is the best part, and that will determine how much you're invested in the game. I didn't think I would spend that much time in an auto-battler, but messing around with formations can be very addictive.

The game is really good and one of the best ones in this genre. Extremely underrated. For $25 it is a steal.
Anonymous No.720131107 [Report]
I remember starting the game at one difficulty, going up 1step after a while and lowering it again in the snowy country.
Any way to know what difficulty I played?
All I remember is I was getting bored of using the same couple squads for most levels since everyone else got wrecked in one round by furries.

>play ogre battle
>have to design and think about your party lineups before battle deployment
>can only have minor external influence during battle with tarot cards
>play unicorn overlord
>ends up boiling down to "how do i adjust my unit positions in every single pre-battle to go from doing 3 damage and everybody dying to taking none and killing the enemy"
my biggest gripe for sure.
Anonymous No.720137596 [Report]
>>720136289
I agree that changing formations like that on the fly shouldn't be a thing, at least not with the way the damage forecast works, but I can't imagine having such terrible squad setups that you actually feel the need to waste time doing it.

Also, I wouldn't call tarot cards in Ogre Battle a minor influence on the battle. They are incredibly strong and you have an essentially limitless supply of them. Consumable items are also quite powerful; you can have a squad get nearly slaughtered and then just bring them back to full strength instantly. You should never need to do this because the game is even easier than Unicorn Overlord, but the option is there.

It's a multiplat so they made it work with whatever controls all the platforms had in common and didn't put in any extra effort for shit like that. It would've been very cool if they had.

>>720118716 (OP)
The game is great. I do remember it being a somewhat easy, though I also don't think I played it on the very highest difficulty (I had no idea what I was getting into or how easy it would be).

It's a solid 5/10 game. The gameplay is brain dead, story is uninteresting and the girls are half-baked. Play some actual strategy game or gacha instead.

Literally what the post I quoted mentioned, use a joycon you point at the screen for pointer control. It would work much better than an analog stick and other games have done it before (like the port of SMG).

dragons crown since its the least boring one but yet its still ridiculously grindy and boring.

Sure it is fun but it only has about 2 hours of gameplay. You make mixed squads with flying units and that's the whole game.
