"premium" live service games?
hey /v/

im working at a small game studio, we're currently on a project which is a "live service" game. the boss wants our game to be "premium" ($20 probably) but also wants us to somehow have live service features, like a battlepass and in game shops. The thing is, it's all free.

what's the vibe here for gamers nowadays? how do you implement a free battlepass track and in game shop without it looking like a typical live service paid track and shop?

is it dumb to do this? is there some better method for these kinds of games today?

let me know what you think. thanks

why would i care about a live service game from a small studio? that just screams "no content but please trust us that content will be added with time". except how could i possibly trust it when your studio is only a few people with no capital?

to have a live service game you need to have goodwill with a fanbase

>battlepass
Just have it function like how battlepasses usually work except everything in said pass is unlockable from playing instead of having some kind of premium reward track.
>Shop
Again, just have it work like how in-game shops used to work. Players gain in-game currency via playing and can use said currency to unlock whatever. If you want to artificially lengthen playtimes you can make the shop selections limited and only have the store refresh it's selection on a timer, but players would appreciate it more if they could just buy whatever whenever.

If you are going to end up charging $20 for your small title, boss is making a good call by telling you to make all that live service shit free (if your studio can actually afford to keep supporting the game). Nothing pisses players off more than having to pay to get in, and then the game asking them to pay more so that they can unlock items.

tell your boss to take a stroll through the graveyard of freemium live-service games and ask what makes them think this one won’t end up there too
