Do you think Sonic Team has learned from their mistakes with Sonic Frontiers?

I don't.

there was this fan game called Utopia I think from a few years back and that was so much fun. holy shit
and then frontiers came out (the first next gen game I bought, day 1 too) and it was so not fun :(

It still baffles me that Sonic has a fanbase after '06
Then again the pokemon company has fans so the autism bar is extremely low

Sonic Team does not do this. You have 25 years worth of evidence.

More like 34 years.

Nah. Yasuhara kept them from falling into that back when he was still involved, but there was a specific point once the millennium turned when Sonic Team decided to start learning the wrong lessons from their games. That was when making the same mistakes over and over again would become their internal mantra.

Nope. As far as map design goes, they're just gonna pull a ToTK and slap a bunch of shit on top of the existing islands and call it a day. Pic related is probably what it'll look like. (Which would've been fine, for the first fucking game and not the sequel.)

Also it's deeply depressing how relevant that image is, nearly 15 years later. Even Shadow Generations still very much suffers from being like the bottom portion of that image, for the most part. I don't need it to be a barren wasteland in terms of openness, but for fuck's sake, can Modern Sonic levels at least PRETEND to not be glorified hallways?

That's because as barren as Utopia is, it still FEELS like a fucking Sonic game, even if you set aside the "muh Green Hill" complaints. It certainly helps that Utopia actually has speed that feels more impactful. (I don't give a shit if flying into the sky after gathering a ton of momentum makes some of you faggot ass contrarians cry, that shit feels fucking fun to play.) Art direction wise, Frontiers is literally the "HIRE THIS MAN" meme made real, and it still sickens me to look at, even if the graphics themselves aren't necessarily bad. It just could've been so much more. While it's not my preferred style of Sonic, I still believe that open world Sonic CAN work, it just needs meaningful map design that isn't just a bunch of generic hills, and god forbid, fucking copy pasted platforms and rails in the sky. Christ that was so lazy it's unreal.

Very sad he didn't (or couldn't) stick around during the formative years of 3D Sonic. Iizuka is a nice guy, but his level design became the gold standard for 3D Sonic stages after Heroes and they hardly ever strayed from it.

Anon, we live in 2010+15

Well, Sega did convince him to step in and try and salvage both R and X-treme during the rough development of each.
There's an interview somewhere where he talks about not being a fan of R despite his work on it because he thinks the game is flawed on a fundamental level (having characters control like cars), and we all know how X-treme's development ended up. Both instances are obviously what soured him on wanting to work on another Sonic thing like SA1.

This image was made way before Frontiers and describes most 3D Sonics' level design

>Art direction wise, Frontiers is literally the "HIRE THIS MAN" meme made real
autistic inbred retards like you who parrot this never understood what the meme even meant
it was never "erm, realistic art direction bad!" you mongoloid
it was an ironic statement making fun of the slew of ignorant comments going "Nintendo hire this man!" because a guy did the bare minimum of dropping mario on the default UE field
the joke is that idiots would believe the video creator to be a talented man who did everything himself and therefore it was an injustice that he wasn't working at nintendo after this incredible technical display, when in reality it was just a random mario model from the internet running on the default scene that comes with UE which anyone can do with zero effort
then autists like you with zero awareness came in and started yelling "they hired this man lol!!1!" at any game with a realistic artstyle because that's what you saw when glancing at the meme vid
