Nope. As far as map design goes, they're just gonna pull a ToTK and slap a bunch of shit on top of the existing islands and call it a day. Pic related is probably what it'll look like. (Which would've been fine, for the first fucking game and not the sequel.)
Also it's deeply depressing how relevant that image is, nearly 15 years later. Even Shadow Generations still very much suffers from being like the bottom portion of that image, for the most part. I don't need it to be a barren wasteland in terms of openness, but for fuck's sake, can Modern Sonic levels at least PRETEND to not be glorified hallways?

That's because as barren as Utopia is, it still FEELS like a fucking Sonic game, even if you set aside the "muh Green Hill" complaints. It certainly helps that Utopia actually has speed that feels more impactful. (I don't give a shit if flying into the sky after gathering a ton of momentum makes some of you faggot ass contrarians cry, that shit feels fucking fun to play.) Art direction wise, Frontiers is literally the "HIRE THIS MAN" meme made real, and it still sickens me to look at, even if the graphics themselves aren't necessarily bad. It just could've been so much more. While it's not my preferred style of Sonic, I still believe that open world Sonic CAN work, it just needs meaningful map design that isn't just a bunch of generic hills, and god forbid, fucking copy pasted platforms and rails in the sky. Christ that was so lazy it's unreal.

Very sad he didn't (or couldn't) stick around during the formative years of 3D Sonic. Iizuka is a nice guy, but his level design became the gold standard for 3D Sonic stages after Heroes and they hardly ever strayed from it.
