Is it better than lilies? The first game was boring and too easy
Anonymous No.720479054 [Report]

It's not harder than Lilies. At its hardest it's about as hard as the middle section of Lilies (which in my opinion was the hardest). It has more creative ways that you can sequence break though which makes it more fun.

Also it has really highly customizable difficulty settings where you can specifically tweak things like enemy health, enemy damage, etc.

I liked that they went for a lighter narrative this time after the misery fest of Lilies.

Sure enough, but is not like if it has any solid competitors aside silksong which is just ok, maybe Grime 2 could give it a run for its money it is guaranteed to come out this year and if it is better than the original then it has potential to become one of the best in the genre.

There are difficulty sliders accessible from go. But besides that:
>Gameplay
Magnolia > Lilies
More customization, about the same number of spirits. Totems for one can significantly change the way you play, though bangles are statslop. Status effects were a little unnecessary in my opinion.
>Enemies
Magnolia > Lilies
More variety than Lilies, in appearance and moveset, albeit a bit less thematically cohesive.
>Bosses
Magnolia > Lilies
Again more diverse ability-wise, but they lacked the presence and spectacle of the best few Lilies bosses. The end boss in particular was a bit disappointing.
>Environments
Lilies > Magnolia
The Witch's Thicket is extremely hard to beat. Magnolia as a whole is a bit forgettable in this regard. Compare the Biological Testing Ground to the Verboten Domain, for another example.
>Music
Lilies > Magnolia
Magnolia overuses vocals compared to Lilies' more subdued and melancholy tracks. Coding is pretty good though.
>Atmosphere
Lilies > Magnolia
Magnolia spells out too much about its world. There's always a concrete somewhere to go, something to do that detracts from the solemn peril and mystery that Lilies did much better. Lilac being a chatty and fearless action girl contributes to this.
>Story
Lilies > Magnolia
Again, too much is said. Most interactions with NPCs boil down to completing tasks. Overall, despite Magnolia having more talking than Lilies, less is said.

I don't care about hollow knight and silksong but I loved Magnolia, it's definitely one of my personal new games of the year.
>>720478901
Both are good but it probably comes down to preference. I like Magnolia more. The difficulty of Magnolia is customizable. I played on the "hard' preset and I thought the challenge was engaging enough but it can be harder if you max out the sliders.
Anonymous No.720481438 [Report]
Magnolia is fucking amazing, they really improved on a lot of what made Lilies great, the new map is the best in its class for a Metroidvania, some of the abilities are useless and I never used them in my playthrough, like Reibolg for example, I never really understood how to utilize him for example.

the parry ability in both of the games sucks mega dick.

Anonymous No.720481820 [Report]
I really wish Blade Chimera wasn't so easy. I adored it mechanically, it's easily one of the most original metroidvanias out there thanks to the ghost sword being your main gimmick.
Thus far silksong is still the worst metroidvania i've played this year. It's not bad, but i cannot see myself ever replaying it because of how tediously boring it is.

I actually got bored on my first playthrough of Magnolia and had to take a break before powering through it again because of this. There were just so many random NPCs that you had to talk to in the start and all their dialogue boiled down to was just getting you to fetch shit. It really should have leaned on the atmosphere more like Lilies did and just let you soak it in as you explore but desu most of the areas aren't as interesting visually

This was a great game. Did nonlinearity and secrets pretty well, level design was fun. Commits a cardinal sin of the genre - splits itself in half with a story blockade, but it has a really good sense of progression, so maybe it's not so bad. Magnolia isn't doing anything to stand out or be flashy and attention-grabbing, but it's just a solid game IMO.

This is Magnolia's biggest problem. So much talking and yet so little emotional weight to anything because the characters spend more time telling you about the story than having any personality, never mind that the game wants you to care about the death of random NPCs you saw once ten hours ago and you're lucky if you even remember who they are at that point.

Not really. Fairly standard metroidvania movement with fairly standard soulslike item progression, lore dripfeeds, and storytelling. Combat had some solid crunch to it and the boss design was usually interesting, but it's not something I'd put in my top 10.

>Does it do anything interesting gameplay wise?
It has thoroughly mediocre platforming and its most unique mechanic is a retarded platform pulling gimmick that makes it even worse.
The most interesting element of it gameplay-wise would be the parry system wherein enemies have multiple health bars and parrying does a little damage to normal health but completely destroys a shielded health bar, and enemies act differently with broken parts. Plus almost every enemy in the game has an ability that you get from them by defeating them with a parry.
Combat still isn't particularly unique but it is polished and there are some great boss fights.

Loved the game, especially how it handled abilities by giving each Stand multiple ones, but thought the art design on the Homunculi was unfocused. The game could never really decide if it wanted them to be Frankenstein monsters or robots, so you get no thematic consistency. Plus the lore was a little forced in that way that sequels to games that didn't expect sequels are, like "Oh turns out that there were tons of descendants of the Ancients just one town over from the first game the whole time, why didn't we just borrow one of them instead of cloning the priestess again?" or how there's a whole new blight source because the writers couldn't think up another curse to plague the land.
I also thought the protagonist was a boy for like 2/3rds of the game.

While understandable, Magnolia portrays it's story and interactions as such because it is not meant to be a hopeless world. You know where to go and you are surrounded with people because you are not meant to be in constant danger nor are you meant to feel despair, unlike with Lilies which did all of these with the simple yet well-executed way of having everyone already be dead.
So i understand people preferring Lilies for all this. And while i prefer its atmosphere as well, i absolutely preferred Magnolia's story compared to it because having to understand a story divided through items and notes throughout the game is very tiresome and annoying, to the point that i'm shocked to see so many people liking it that way.

There are so many cool design choices in this game. Like how you unlock concept art with bonus currency. It feels like filling out a little digital artbook. Also love the meticulous difficulty settings.

You're right that she's not a tomboy but completely wrong about bob cuts. They're cute, I'm sorry if you can't enjoy a variety of hairstyles.

Maybe they chose to give her short hair to not confuse the player into believing that Lilac is Lily.

Season 2 never unfortunately. But yeah, I view Lilac as basically a white hair loli Purin. Like sort of calm and studious. Maybe slightly tsundere but not too much.

It was shit just like the first game. Horrible combat and level design. You fags like it for one reason and one reason only. The little girl.

That's pretty much it.
Even if I'm very bored of Dark Souls story telling where everyone constantly vagueposts and nothing makes sense unless you put in absurd amounts of work, in this case them talking so much didn't help the overall mood.
