it's weird how smart guns are such a big part of the setting in metal gear solid and companies tried to push for them in the 90s when MGS1 came out and they still don't work today. or was that just a twin snakes thing? I only played twin snakes and MGS2

in twin snakes at least they say you can't just steal someone's gun because it's a smart gun locked to their DNA

You mean how they registered guns to biometrics so you can't just pick up someone's gun? It's one of those things that sounds good, but electronic parts always fail before mechanical parts (like like corrosion or electronic interference) so you're a soldier with a gun that doesn't work in a life or death situation. Better off with a sling, a lanyard ,or some kind of secure holster for retention.

yeah, irl at that time smith and wesson said they were going to make guns that worked like that and NJ passed a law mandating it and the tech doesn't work and no one wants it

Basically nobody trusted a fingerprint scanner to work properly in a life or death situation where you needed to use your gun.
Cops don't even have safeties on their guns for that reason.

I think that might be more of a misnomer. They mainly use Glocks, and Glocks in general don't have a tradition bolt safety or whatever completely locks the gun. They do have a trigger safety, drop safetu, and firing pin safety.

the thing you have to remember is MGS's world had more and more military conflicts every decade. Things might have seemed like things were going that way from the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s in real life, but things never really boiled over, and largely the world is still at peace. There is no need for smart guns or the MGS4 gun ID thing in real life. If we lived in a time where wars were way more common then you might see actual development of them, even shit like friendly fire sensors could even be real theoretically, it's not hard to synchronize all these technologies together to work, it's just money and time and people that care to do it.

It's lore as a gameplay mechanic to explain why you can't just knock out of a Genome Soldier and steal his FAMAS. Smart probably isn't the right way to describe it, but it is ID locked to the registered user.
MGS4 did a lot more with the idea with Drebin being an arms dealer that could sell you unlocked guns and the whole "Guns of the Patriots" scene where Liquid Ocelot just turns off everyone's weapons.

biometrics are a huge pain in the ass IRL. only reason this shit was in the game was to force you to stealth instead just killing grunts and keep stealing their weapons.
>>720491937
no military is ever going to use smart guns, they don't work and no one trusts them. the only ones pushing for that shit are anti gunners who want to use it for gun bans. hell everytown, the anti gun group, was actually advertising for some "smart gun" on twitter

>Smart probably isn't the right way to describe it, but it is ID locked to the registered user.
that's what smartguns are irl. or at least what they would be if they worked
>>720492376
Smart for me always goes to the Aliens Smartgun or the Cyberpunk weapons that shoot homing bullets.
I guess it just goes to show how much a flop the idea of biometrically locked guns are that the 'real' name for it goes basically unrecognized.

they've tried finger prints, facial recognition like an iphone, rings and other RIFD chips and grip recognition

They make gun safes like that. Unfortunately they fucking suck because in a tense situation you might be sweaty or dirty and now the safe doesn't recognize your fingerprints so you try to enter the password but you can't remember because you always just use the fingerprint and so you fucking die

It could just be like an RFID thing. Get a tiny little thing implanted in your wrist, have the guns connect to a global satellite connection, and boom you can only fire the guns you've been authorized for
