It's fun to experiment with all the different moves you unlock and upgrade as you go through the game. I think the best type of combo is one that uses tackle to superarmor through any enemy attacks as you engage and then quickly launch into the air to do damage. iirc the most effective path involved lifting the enemy, dropping a landmine, and using an uppercut.
btw if you start your combo with a basic straight punch then follow up with a tackle, the negative damage multiplier for successive hits is less than if you start the combo with a tackle.

i had more fun with the gameplay than the VN part
the writing was a bit contrived and i absolutely hated how they "faked" certain clues (eg. the priest worshiping Sophia for no apparant reason then it turns out he was just pretending)

it's a very long visual novel where periodically there are mecha fights in cyberspace, it'll be you or yourself and some teammates against an indeterminate amount of enemies. lots of boss fights.

the combat is combo-based, there are a lot of moves across various categories (melee, projectile, bombs, etc) and you can mix and match which ones you use to create your own combos

God Hand for PS2 or Key of Heaven for PSP if you ever played that would be the closest comparisons. Each weapon and ability is a separate move that you can map to different keys, and each move can be executed once in a combo. There's also special moves that consume your juice bar, or an ability that lets you perform a combo twice and above the usual heat limit. Baldr Heart (untranslated AFAIK) added one extra ability slot that's either used for an utility skill or an ability that you can perform multiple times in a combo.

Essentially you dash around the arena until you see an opening in which you can hit an enemy without getting caught by another enemy. Then you launch the enemy into the air and combo to death. Then go back to dashing around.
Sometimes you fight a large number of weak enemies instead, in that case you can dash around and mow through the mooks with a couple strong attacks rather than doing combos.
After fighting you might unlock or upgrade your attacks, so you can go into training mode to find a way to link your moves into a more effective combo.
