Remake came out mid-COVID and wasn't a flop - it's Rebirth that fucked up. Part of that's timing and an anemic marketing campaign; the game's fanbase is old as fuck, and they NEED too being in new people. Instead, all they did was do lip-service stuff like
>Rebirth is the perfect entry point for new players
When anyone with a brain knew that was a big fat lie.
Second - pacing. Both games' fat-to-meat ratio is fucked up, and the only time the original game falls into that hole is when you go WEAPON-hunting in the last act. Thankfully they knew not to drag that out, but 26 years of the Compilation shitshow made them forget. And now we got 3 games outta one.
Thirdly: tone. They went a direction with Advent Children that was at the time forgiven cause there was nothing like it around. 20 years later, the flaws in that direction kneecapped the remakes with bad design choices e.g Sephiroth fucking everywhere cause every FF7 thing needs a Sephiroth bossfight.
The sheer stupidity behind that line of thinking just... I got no words.
Lastly: I'm not one for 1:1 remakes. They're navel-gazing nostalgia and an excuse to burn money like it grows on trees (case in point, MGS Delta). Sure, there's stuff that won't hit as hard the second time round for parts off the fanbase like Aerith's death, but they looked at garbage bag ghosts from Harry Potter and said: that enables us to reexamine old themes in a new light! Like, nobody gave them a reality check?
Fuck, I hope Requiem (or whatever) doesn't drop the ball as hard.
