Is a lot cleaner instrumentation which is then muddied by adding reverb. It's the difference between "you just stepped into the heart of the machine" vs "here's another boss fight".

Sticking with the GCN forgotten JRPGs, the final boss theme in Crystal Chronicles is pretty sweet too. The instrumentation for the entire OST felt very... Celtic? The percussion in particular feels very war-drums like.

an rpg with a consistent plot lasting over 10 entries and three times that for years with a single main character and a world that evolves with the changes he and other characters make
crapsack world where everything is designed to be as awful as physically possible BUT our hero, the wild card that he is, throws a wrench in the machinations of multiple asshole gods

basically if you are sick of goody two shoes heroes limited by what they can do to save the world, this is perfect for you
even if that isn't your jam, it's still very fun for having an unpredictable hero in a kitchen sink world that is consistent over 10 entries
i can't oversell the consistency enough, i mean how many series do you know that have a consistent plot over 10 games that are all competent and fun and worth playing and add to the series
also fucking 10/10 music if that wasn't already apparent

I've never even played this game I just had it in my vidya ost playlist for like 15 years. Probably should give it and Parasite Eve a chance sometime, both have killer final boss themes.
