Why would you do that in the first place?
Anonymous No.721201249 [Report]
steam just isn't about making online friends to me anymore. it never used to be, either, if i really think about it.
i didn't talk to these people, i used them as a way to notice when my favorite tf2 server was full.
if you played any multiplayer source game you definitely recall having a similar experience.

I don’t have anything to say anymore. I just go to work and come home. Even if I set it to Online I’d never get a message. Being a weeb and pissing everyone off was fun on here in 2011 but those days are just gone.

Because when you are going to play a single player game or simply have steam running on the background it's a waste of time for everyone to think you are available if you're not.

I don't like the idea of having everything I do on steam announced to everyone, and I don't want to dance around hurt feelings or get ensnared in wearisome guilt trips if I don't feel like playing with them right now.
I just want to play games.

I just don't have anything in common with the people that I used to play with. It's been 15 years, I moved on and many of them just didn't.

It's too sad. The only things we have to talk about are all times, "glory days" and I just get the sense that their life has not moved on.
And it's at the point where I feel like I need to apologise for having become a normie and moved on, I need to downplay my life and how happy I am with my circumstances, because my friends failed to launch. Some of the happiest memories I have are being neet with them.

But it just seems sad to me now.

I don't think I have ever used Invisible. I'm online 24/7 and I'm always playing games, I have a huge friends list with lots of IRL people, old co-workers and online friends and they can always see when I am playing a game I guess.

What's the worst that could happen?

Its just easier to stay offline, instead of trying to sift through 100+ friends.
Anonymous No.721206093 [Report]
I stay invisible for a few reasons:
1) I just want to play what I like without getting dogpiled. Stuff like Forspoken or Metal Gear Survive aren’t “cool” online, but they’re still very fun. One guy even threatened to shoot me in the head just because I played a non‑Kojima Metal Gear game. That’s how unhinged people get.
2) Half the time I don’t feel like talking. If I’m visible, there’s a 99% chance someone drags me into a chat I don’t have the energy for.
3) Some people get weirdly attached after a single match. Win once together and suddenly they act like we’re best friends and want to know my life story. No thanks.

what sucks about invisible mode is that it doesn't reset when you restart steam, I once was appearing offline for months because I forgot, until a friend sent me a message asking if I was okay

read my post again, I want the exact opposite...
Also, if you go offline you will be reconnected when steam restart, but if you go invisible you will stay invisible until you change again, so if you forget people will think you died.

IRL friend out of nowhere got super social on Steam to the point of annoyance. He links trailers from every literally who video game coming out saying how awesome it looks. Like seriously dude, just wait for it to come out, I don't have $5000 a year to spend on vidya.
Anonymous No.721207542 [Report]
>>721207429
Also adding more. He pulled a "did you even watch the whole thing?" after linking three 20 minute videos while I'm playing a game. I actually was still watching it and making a comment halfway through the video. Been using offline feature more since then.

i get what you meant now. you must be in your 20s with a bunch of 20s kids as friends.
when you get older it's perfectly normal to see one of your friends go offline for 200+ days and think
>welp he's finally killed himself, good for him
then it turns out he's just been on a vodka binge and homeless the whole time
Anonymous No.721207862 [Report]
originally I used it because I was on wifi that, despite otherwise being perfectly fine, would apparently cause me to spam "x has started playing game" notifications. Someone told me and I immediately opted to do invisible mode.
Coincidentally, staying invisible all the time is about the time I started drifting away from my friends. Would not recommend.
